Sapphire is amazed at the power of Jū, but asks if there is more to it. She demonstrates by pulling out a vine that she uses to climb trees. She explains that if one simply throws a vine, it won't reach a tree, but if it is twirled around before being thrown, it will accumulate force and be able to reach it. She finishes by stating that Jū is not about attacking straight on, but allowing the energy in one's body to be collected inside.

Plot

Spoiler warning: this article may contain major plot or ending details.

In Granite Cave, Sapphire prepares with Chic and Rono for her upcoming Gym battle. She has the two of them fight the wild Zubat, Golbat, Geodude, and Graveler living in the cave. From their brief conversation earlier, Sapphire knows that if she fought Brawly as she is now, she'd lose the fight. She apologizes to Mr. Stone for not delivering the letter immediately, but since it's the only time she can fight Brawly, she has to finish tonight.

Later, Sapphire arrives at the Dewford Gym, where she finds Brawly waiting for her inside. The two start their match, with Brawly sending out his Machop. The Machop is easily defeated by Chic, who has now evolved into a Combusken. Sapphire reveals that Rono has evolved into a Lairon and tells Brawly to send out his next Pokémon.

Brawly sends out his strongest Pokémon, Makuhita, and Sapphire chooses Rono to face it. Using its Jū fighting style, Makuhita easily defeats Rono, forcing Sapphire to switch him with Chic. Chic attacks, but Makuhita manages to deflect and counter everyone of its moves and gets one of her claws trapped in the wall in the process.

Brawly confirms this guess, but reveals that she is wrong about one thing. He reveals that the energy Makuhita is using isn't simply for fighting, but for evolution as well. His statement is proven correct as Makuhita proceeds to evolve into a Hariyama.
