Pokémon Stadium (Japanese)

Pokémon Stadium (Japanese: ポケモンスタジアム), sometimes known as Pokémon Stadium 0 among English fans to distinguish it from the later sequels, is the first game of the Stadium series, and was released in Japan in 1998. This version featured only 42 Pokémon instead of all of the 151 Generation I Pokémon. As a result, not even every evolution family was included. This game was originally intended for the Nintendo 64DD format, but as it was a commercial failure, Pokémon Stadium transferred to cartridge format. There were also plans for an expansion disk, a proposed add-on for the Nintendo 64DD, but the expansion disk was never released, and instead, a sequel with more features (known as the original Pokémon Stadium elsewhere in the world) was released with all of the Generation I Pokémon.

Gameplay

The game starts with a keyboard, and it asks if the player or players would like to use their Game Boy Pokémon. If they have chosen to bring their Pokémon, the extra features will be open to use. If not, the player only has access to some of the modes. There are five modes in Stadium 0:

  • Tournament Mode: The 42 eligible Pokémon can battle against several computer-controlled players.
  • Free Battle: 1 to 4 players can battle with preselected teams.
  • View Pokédex: Players can view their Pokédex in 3D (Transfer Pak and Pokémon Red, Green, or Blue required).
  • GB Trade: Two game paks can trade (Transfer Pak and Pokémon Red, Green, or Blue required).
  • GB Battle: The 42 Pokémon mentioned below can battle (Transfer Pak and Pokémon Red, Green, or Blue required).

Pokémon

Pocket Monsters Stadium only featured 42 Pokémon available for play, meaning that 109 Pokémon could not be seen. Many of those were unevolved relatives of Pokémon who did appear in the game. Below is a list of the Pokémon that were included in the game.

Trivia

  • Pikachu is the only Pokémon allowed to battle in this game that isn't fully evolved in Generation I, or else not involved in evolution at all; Raichu does not appear in the game at all.
