The episode begins with Ash getting ready for his fourth Gym Battle against Morty and his powerful team of Template:Type2 Pokémon. Ash has already been witness to Morty’s Gengar and been stunned by the Pokémon’s power. As Ash muses over battle strategies, Nurse Joy overhears and suggests he uses his Noctowl.

The battle begins with Morty calling out Gastly to Ash's Noctowl. Brock and Misty wonder why he has called Noctowl to fight first. Ash, however, is confident in his choice. Ash has Noctowl begin with hypnosis. Gastly dodges, disappearing in the process. Morty has Gastly use Confusion, which bothers Noctowl. In response, Noctowl uses Foresight. The move finds Gastly. Ash then has Noctowl attempt to tackle Gastly, but Gastly remains too fast. After a chase, Noctowl uses Hypnosis, but it fails. Gastly uses Lick as a whip, hitting Noctowl. Ash returns Noctowl to its Poké Ball.

Now having seen Gastly's power, Ash picks Pikachu as his second choice. Pikachu uses Quick Attack to start off. The attack hits Gastly. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt. Gastly dodges and uses Night Shade. It hits, and Pikachu is unable to battle. Cyndaquil is his next choice. It starts with Flamethrower to Night Shade. Cyndaquil dodges with Quick Attack. Gastly uses Lick to Cyndaquil's Tackle. Cyndaquil climbs on to Gastly's tongue and tackles Gastly, defeating it.

For Morty's second choice, he picks Haunter. Cyndaquil starts with Flamethrower. Haunter disappears then uses Mean Look to make Ash stick with Cyndaquil. Cyndaquil uses swift, hurting Haunter. Haunter uses Hypnosis. Cyndaquil counters with SmokeScreen. Haunter grabs cyndaquil and then licks it, ending Cyndaquil's battle. Ash is down to one Pokémon. Noctowl comes back out. Noctowl uses Foresight. Haunter tries Lick and then Confuse Ray. The battle looks over. Haunter uses Night Shade. Noctowl uses Tackle. The two attacks collide making Noctowl the winner. Noctowl learns Confusion. Gengar comes out. Gengar uses Shadow Ball to Confusion. Gengar disappears and starts using Night Shade. Ash has Noctowl use Confusion through the building to find Gengar then uses Tackle. Gengar is unable to battle. Ash wins. Ash gets the badge and he continues on his journey.

Trivia

  • This episode's dub title is a reference to the phrase From coast to coast.
  • Meowth food illusion includes a real-life fish.
  • The Gastly that are hypnotising Team Rocket break the fourth wall by turning towards the camera and laughing at the audience.
  • The Treasure Detector makes the same noise as the slot machines at Celadon City during Generation III.

Errors

  • Brock incorrectly states that because Noctowl used Foresight its Physical attacks will have an affect, when it is Normal type attacks that gain the ability to affect Ghost types.
  • When Haunter uses Mean Look on Cyndaquil, Misty says that Morty said that challenger is allowed to use substitutes. In reality, the referee said this, not Morty.
  • Gastly's Lick shouldn't have affected Noctowl because Template:Type2 attacks don't affect Template:Type2s. For this same reason Noctowl should not have had to dodge Gengar's Night Shade attacks
  • Ash's Cyndaquil hits Morty's Haunter with a Swift attack which shouldn't have hit as the Haunter had not been hit by Foresight, unlike Gastly.
