Appendix:HeartGold and SoulSilver walkthrough/Section 2

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions. This walkthrough follows the remade Nintendo DS versions, not Pokémon Gold and Silver.
The guide for those can be found here.

Routes 30 & 31

Now that you've completed the errand for Professor Elm, the Youngsters that had blocked the western part of the route have ended their battle, allowing you to continue north on the way to Violet City.

Route 31 is a small route that serves to connect Route 30 in the south and Violet in the west. The western entrance to Dark Cave is located here, but you won't be able to get very far yet, though you can catch a Geodude from there and raise it to learn Rock Throw if you wish to use it for the upcoming Gym match. Pick up the Potion near the cave and continue west. You can pick a Blk Apricorn off the tree by the pond, and grab a Poké Ball south of the nearby ledge.

Violet City

Violet City

Violet is the first city with a Pokémon Gym. Other major attractions include the Sprout Tower to the north, and Earl's Pokémon Academy to the east.
There is also a Juggler near the Poké Center that will give out three different types of Berries for each Shard you give him.

In-game trade

The kid in the house near the Poké Center is looking for a Bellsprout. If you happened to catch an extra on Route 31, it's a good idea to trade it to him. The Onix you get in return can make the Gym battle here much easier, especially if you chose to start with Chikorita.

Earl's Pokémon Academy

The Academy is where young prospective Trainers learn how to raise Pokémon. On the blackboard are descriptions of the several status problems that can affect a Pokémon.

Sprout Tower

Sprout Tower

The Sprout Tower is a towering pagoda run by Sages. Since these monks also train Pokémon, this is a good opportunity to train before challenging the Violet Gym. Enter the tower and go up the latter. Fight the first Sage and go down the latter to the east. Grab the Parlyz Heal, fight the Sage in the west and go up the latter. Grab the X Accuracy, fight the other Sage, and go up the latter. Grab the Potion and fight the three Sages. After battling past the other Sages, you find the red-haired guy having just defeated the head Sage. He says that he doesn't agree treating Pokémon with love, then uses an Escape Rope to leave the tower. Grab the Escape Rope in the east, then battle the head Sage. After defeating the elder Sage, you will receive TM70 (Flash). After receiving the TM, Trainers are free to challenge the Violet Gym.

Violet Gym

Leader: Falkner

The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon

The Violet Gym specializes in Flying-types, so bring along Pokémon with Rock-type and Electric-types to have the advantage. Step onto the wooden platform to be elevated high into the air. Like in Generation II, the Gym features a central walkway in the shape of an "S", but this time, Trainers can avoid the two Bird Keepers to battle Falkner immediately. His Pidgey isn't much of a threat, but be wary when fighting his Pidgeotto - it knows the move Roost, which recovers half of its health and removes the Flying-type and its weaknesses to Rock and Electric-type moves.

After defeating him, Falkner awards you the Zephyr Badge, which makes all Pokémon of level 20 or less obey without question. The badge also allows the use of Rock Smash in the field. He also gives out TM51 (Roost) as a prize.

When you leave the Gym, Elm calls you, asking you to speak to his aide. Unlike in Generation II, his aide is waiting at the Poké Mart, not the Pokémon Center. He asks you to take care of the Mystery Egg; sometime later, it will hatch into a Togepi who knows Extrasensory, then evolve into Togetic who has a pretty good movepool, and finally Togekiss who knows Aura Sphere and Sky Attack. Once the egg hatches Professor Elm will contact you and wishes to see the Pokémon that hatched from it. If you talk to him with Togepi as your Walking Pokémon he'll give you a free Everstone. When you step outside the Mart, you will encounter one of the five Kimono Girls, five sisters who study at Ecruteak City's Dance Theater. She takes note of your character, and leaves to the south. Pick the Ylw Apricorn nearby, and leave west from the city to reach part of Route 36.
