Pokémon: Greatest Battles is a book featuring various Pokémon match-ups, for the reader to decide who wins. It was published by Scholastic in 2004 and was written by Maria S. Barbo.
Synopsis
The book starts off with tips for trying to predict the outcomes of Pokémon battles. Type, experience, skill, and personality are cited as key factors. The book then gives more information on Pokémon types. After that, 34 one-on-one battles (except for one two-on-two) are presented, with the stats of each Pokémon below their pictures. The battles feature 63 different Pokémon. The battles range from classic duels like Ash's Pikachu vs. Team Rocket's Meowth, to type-themed battles like Venusaur vs. Sceptile, to Legendary battles like Groudon vs. Kyogre. As the book was published towards the beginning of the Advanced Generation series of the anime, it mainly focuses on Generation III Pokémon. At the end of the book, the reader can create their own battles by drawing Pokémon in the spaces.
Notable Pokémon
Trivia
- The Pichu Brothers, famous from various Pikachu shorts, are featured in a Double Battle against Plusle and Minun.
- Mudkip is not labeled as Brock's, while other Pokémon are labeled as their Trainers'. This may be an error, but it may just be that the episode in which Brock catches Mudkip had not aired in the United States at the time of the release of the book.
Errors
- As with most Pokémon books, there are a few misprints in the book; for example, in the type section, the background swirl on the Psychic type box interlaps with Wynaut's body, and similarly, a line from the background behind Sceptile crosses its eye.
- On the poster that comes with the book, Team Rocket's Meowth's stats are maxed out and its ability is labeled as Scratch.
