Tierno debuted in ''[[XY039|Summer of Discovery!]]'' along with {{an|Shauna}} and {{an|Trevor}}, and his {{TP|Tierno|Squirtle}}. He first had a {{pkmn|battle}} against a {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s {{p|Conkeldurr}} and won. Later that episode, he battled [[Ash's Froakie]]. During his battle with Ash, he revealed that he dreams of forming a dance unit with his Pokémon.

Tierno entered the [[Lumiose Conference]] in ''[[XY125|A League of His Own!]]'', in which he was seen talking to Trevor during the opening reception. In the [[XY126|following episode]], he was revealed to have advanced all the way to the quarterfinals, where he was matched against [[Sawyer]].

During the match, Tierno first sent out Ludicolo to battle Sawyer's {{p|Aegislash}}. He commanded Ludicolo to use {{m|Rain Dance}} in order to activate its {{a|Swift Swim}} [[Ability]], but Sawyer's strategy of protecting Aegislash with {{m|King's Shield}} and raising its {{stat|Attack}} with {{m|Swords Dance}} proved successful and Ludicolo was [[Fainting|knocked out]]. After that, Tierno decided to use Raichu, and the {{pkmn|category|Mouse Pokémon}} made quick work of Aegislash with its {{m|Dig}} attack. Sawyer then called out {{p|Slurpuff}} and had it use {{m|Attract}}, {{status|Infatuation|infatuating}} Raichu and prompting Tierno to [[Recall|return it to its Poké Ball]].

After that, Tierno called out Blastoise, and when Slurpuff used Attract again, it had no effect. Tierno then asked Blastoise to use {{m|Hydro Cannon}}, rendering the {{type|Fairy}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} unable to battle and forcing Sawyer to sent out his last Pokémon, {{TP|Sawyer|Sceptile}}, to the field. Blastoise managed to stand his ground for a while, even resisting a [[super-effective]] {{m|Leaf Blade}}, but ended up losing after it got hit by {{m|Frenzy Plant}}. Before he fainted, it used Rain Dance to change the [[weather]] and make things easier for his teammate Raichu. When Tierno brought Raichu back into battle and commanded her to use {{m|Thunder}}, he was taken aback as Sceptile [[Mega Evolution|Mega Evolved]] and gained the {{a|Lightning Rod}} Ability, thus being unaffected by Thunder. Tierno then had Raichu use {{m|Focus Blast}}, but Sawyer responded by commanding Mega Sceptile to use Dragon Claw, cutting the Focus Blast in half and knocking Raichu unconscious. As a result, Tierno was eliminated from the competition.

In ''[[XY140|Till We Compete Again!]]'', Tierno and his group watched some of the [[wild Pokémon]] who recently escaped Lumiose City during the Team Flare incident.

Much like his [[Tierno|game counterpart]], Tierno is a dancer. Despite being a rookie {{pkmn|Trainer}}, he can cope well when battling more experienced opponents thanks to his skills, teaching dance moves to his Pokémon so they can evade attacks with ease. He also battles strategically, like Sawyer, by ''[[XY126|Valuable Experience for All!]]''.

Tierno is very friendly and is always encouraging his friends to do their best. He is very supportive of {{an|Shauna}} and often watches her {{pkmn|Showcase}} performances. He has feelings for {{an|Serena}}, which he demonstrates every time they meet. He was responsible for introducing Shauna to Serena.

Tierno's affinity for dancing is reflected in his [[party]], as he tends to {{pkmn2|caught|catch}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with special dancing skills such as {{p|Hitmontop}} and {{p|Ludicolo}}. Tierno uses others, like {{p|Raichu}}, to balance his team and have advantages in his next challenges. These dancing skills not only serve as choreography, but they also contribute to the battling method of his {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}, where they can more easily dodge more powerful opponents.
