The Dragon's Den is inaccessible before defeating [[Clair]] in the [[Blackthorn Gym]], as it is blocked off by a man in front of the cave. After defeating Clair, it must be traversed to obtain the {{badge|Rising}}.


After defeating [[Blackthorn City]]'s [[Gym#Blackthorn Gym|Gym]], the player is granted access to the underground den. At the end of the Den's maze is the home and shrine of the Master of the Dragon User Clan, who will then give the player a quiz on the treatment of their [[Pokémon]].
In {{game|Crystal}}, {{2v2|HeartGold|SoulSilver}}, several {{pkmn|Trainer}}s can be found in the cave. The '''Dragon Shrine''' (Japanese: '''りゅうのほこら''' ''Dragon {{wp|Hokora|Shrine}}'') is located in the south end (blocked off by a {{OBP|whirlpool|obstacle}}), where the {{OBP|Master|Dragon Tamer clan}} will quiz the {{player}} on their attitude towards and treatment of their {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. After the completes the quiz, they will be rewarded with a {{p|Dratini}}. If they got all the answers right the first time, the Dratini will know {{m|Extreme Speed|ExtremeSpeed}}.


There are only two kinds of [[wild Pokémon]] to be found in the water: {{p|Magikarp}} and {{p|Dratini}}. Dratini is pure {{t|Dragon}}-type and Magikarp evolves into {{p|Gyarados}}, which learns some Dragon-type [[move]]s.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, after the player battles Silver at [[Mt. Moon]], they can participate in a [[Multi Battle]] with him against [[Lance]] and Clair here. Additionally, in these games, if the player receives the Rising Badge from Clair and then leaves the Dragon's Den with {{m|Dig}}, {{m|Teleport}}, or an [[Escape Rope]], then they must return to her Gym in order to collect the TM.

Of note is that {{game|Crystal}}'s redesign of the Dragon's Den added {{m|Headbutt}} trees to the back of the Dragon Shrine. Despite this, no {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} can be found [[Headbutt tree|hiding in them]]. In {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}'s redesign, the Headbutt trees are absent, much like in its original design from {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}.
