== Move resets ==
Just adding detail to a recent edit summary: I'm arguing it's unjustified speculation to say that move resets occur "starting in Gen 8", with the following partial piece of evidence:
* Transferring a Pokemon from GO to mobile HOME that is incompatible with all Gen 8 games causes it to display its USUM moveset. There would be no reason to do this if the moveset were about to be reset upon transfer to Gen 9 (the player would see four moves they never get to use anywhere). They could've just displayed a greyed-out moveset like Switch HOME does when connected to an incompatible game, but they chose not to.

Mainspacing

I'd like to have a mainspace page about this. What should I do? Are you planning on updating this? Nescientist (talk) 17:01, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

It can almost be mainspaced.
But I want a version of the transfer nav template with lines at least in the middle column... But I have to get to work. If you wanna just do that real simple and you think it looks fine, I'd be happy for the assistance. I was also think of maybe changing it to look roughly like
Time Capsule: I<>II
Dual-slot mode/Pal Park: III>IV
Poke Transfer/Relocator > IV/V
Pokemon Transporter: V/I VC/II VC>Bank
Bank: Transporter/VI/VII>VI/VII
GO Park: GO>PE
Pokemon HOME: Bank/PE>VIII
(I.e., a little more strictly one row per method.) So if you'd like to try that... Anyway, g2g. Tiddlywinks (talk) 14:21, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
But HOME is missing its section? I would need to gather info, so there's no "real quick" for me, sorry. Same for your suggestion. But it's not like it's exceptionally urgent anyway. Nescientist (talk) 15:13, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
I don't know them enough either to write anything without referring to other pages first. Honestly, my intention was pretty much to mainspace it and let people make those updates. (I didn't say as much, but the one thing I'd like currently is a (good) TOC-like table for the top of the page (like on Type). Not meaning I'm looking to have it link the sections; just a good and quick/immediate overview.) Tiddlywinks (talk) 19:18, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
I'm not gonna be able to wikify this today (and I'm hoping you could if you like it), but I think I'd go for hubs and labelled arrows. Presented to you by professional pixel artist Nescientist.

It shows which is one-way and which is two-way, and you'd have the liberty to add limitations (like from HOME to VIII). Not sure if you plan to edit the template, but as long as it's protected, I certainly won't.. Nescientist (talk) 13:24, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Any progress? Feel free to just disregard my idea if you have other plans. Nescientist (talk) 10:45, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
I've had to focus on other things. (Sorry, I missed the ASCII art previously.) If you can develop code for that (maybe just post it here), I'll take a closer look. Tiddlywinks (talk) 14:10, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
The ASCII art was supposed to be quick and dirty, but already took considerably longer than expected. (However, it is the best visual presentation I know of, and I'll look exactly here when I want a quick reminder.) If you said it was exactly what this article needs, and won't do it yourself for some time and noone else will either, then maybe I can be bothered. But wikicoding it isn't my idea of fun, you're better at it then I am (as are others), and there's probably better things for me to do right now, sorry. Nescientist (talk) 10:46, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Regarding the scope of this article

This article has seen significant growth lately, but I worry if it's getting too large and/or potentially duplicating info from other articles - how much is too much, etc. Basically, what is this article aiming to answer, and what should it let other articles answer?

My understanding is that this article should answer:

  • What transfer methods are available to each game/generation, etc? (the details of each method, i.e. how to perform transfer and how the Pokémon are modified, can go on the methods' specific pages).
  • What is the compatibility of each transfer method? (i.e. is it one-way, two-way, something in-between, etc)
  • Which Pokémon can or cannot be transferred? (I don't think we have a raw listing of this anywhere else, so this article would be a good place to list transfer restrictions)

In essence, this article could act as a central hub, from which users can find the transfer method articles.

There are some other topics that I'm unsure about including:

  • Two-way transfer between core series and side games. For example: Stadium, Colosseum, XD, Battle Revolution, Ranch, Pokewalker. This involves the transfer of a Pokémon between games, but it is not cross-generational, and is not core-to-core. Some Pokémon will even originate in these side games, creating a situation more like Pokémon GO, which is listed.
  • One-way transfer from non-GO side games. For example: Ranger, Dream Radar, ORAS Demo. There's some overlap with Mystery Gift here, but Dream Radar and the ORAS demo bypass Mystery Gift, instead using Pokémon Link. Again, this creates a situation similar to GO.

What are your thoughts? --Boblers (talk) 09:48, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

I imagine this page is the first thing people will be looking at when trying to get to know transfer in general, or be reminded about what is and isn't possible. (It's at least what I do.) So this being a "hub" certainly makes sense.
Ideally, I wouldn't mind if it's somewhat more table-like, more standardized, so the basic main information is easily visible/accessible (without reading the whole text-based article).
About restrictions, I believe this should include more than just species restrictions (like no HMs etc.), not sure if your point included that; maybe all the details can be offloaded to the individual pages, but I'm pretty sure it's something the hub should include. (Ideally, all I need to answer "Can I transfer <Pokémon> with <move> from <game> to <game>, and if so by what means?" is a brief look at this page and that's it.)
I agree with the rest. As for the things you're unsure about, I believe those are less important, but should still be here!? Maybe have two main headers, one between core games only, one for the rest!? (Just spitballing.) Nescientist (talk) 15:05, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
