Character Profile

Main article: Tapu Koko (Pokémon)

Tapu Koko is a fickle and energetic Pokémon, but it also one that is incredibly curious, often appearing before people from time to time. Despite it's fun and energetic behavior, Tapu Koko can also be quite cruel and aggressive if it were to be put in a bad mood. However, the Pokémon is quite forgetful, and will often forget what made it angry. As the guardian of Melemele Island, Tapu Koko has multiple traits that can define it as being brave, loyal and heroic, displayed at the beginning of the game where the Pokémon protects Nebby. It is known to leave objects for people. Many festivals are held in Tapu Koko's favor, including at inauguration that would kick start a new Trainer's island challenge. Like the other Land Spirit Pokémon, Tapu Koko chooses the kahuna of the island, and also provides them with Sparkling Stones, which can be turned into Z-Rings or Z-Power Rings.

Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Tapu Koko first makes its debut in the original Sun and Moon titles, where it presents itself to the player and Lillie at the beginning of the game. It contains mostly the same role in both titles but specifics differ.

At the beginning of both titles, the player will find an uneasy Lillie, attempting to save her Cosmog, Nebby, from a flock of wild Spearow on an unsteady blank bridge on Mahalo Trail. After the player's attempt to guard Nebby, the Legendary Pokémon uses its power to collapse the bridge, causing the two to nearly fall into the rushing river below. Tapu Koko's lightning quick speed not only knocks the Spearow away from the player and Nebby, but also grabs the two before hitting the river and rushes them towards the entrance of Mahalo Trail where Lillie first attempted to cross. The player, Lillie and Nebby all exchange a quick glance with the guardian deity that had appeared before them. Tapu Koko once again, flies away at quick pace, leaving the group in disbelief. Lillie notices a Sparkling Stone on the ground and offers it to the player before they make their way back to Iki Town. This Sparkling Stone is then given to Hala by the player and is turned into either a Z-RingSM or a Z-Power RingUSUM by the time they pick it up the following day. The same day where the player receives this item is also the same day where they and Hau begin their island challenge, and a festival to commemorate their inauguration is held. A Pokémon battle between the two Trainers is held to honor Tapu Koko, who is very pleased by the results of the battle, starting their island challenge. After the player makes their trip around Melemele Island on their island challenge, they will be met with a grand trial and a battle against the island kahuna, Hala. This grand trial is also held in praise of Tapu Koko. Tapu Koko is happy with the results of the player's efforts against Hala and lets out a roar. Hala explains that Tapu Koko may be excited to battle the player once they gain the strength to do so.

Tapu Koko reappears at the climax of both sets of games. In Sun and Moon's version of the climax, Lusamine has unleashed a set of Ultra Wormholes across Alola, allowing for Ultra Beasts to invade the region. This alerts the guardian deities to protect their home form the incoming invaders. Tapu Koko swoops down in front of Hala, fighting along his side, against a BuzzwoleS/PheromosaM. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's version of the climax, Lusamine summons a single Ultra Wormhole instead, causing Necrozma to appear at Poni Island. After defeat against the player, Necrozma is the one to summon multiple Ultra Wormholes and summons Ultra Beasts into the region. Here, Tapu Koko plays a similar role as it did in Sun and Moon, however, while Hala is present, Tapu Koko instead fights with Hau against an opposing BlacephalonUS/StakatakaUM.

In Sun and Moon exclusively, the player and Lillie will leave the festival commemorating the player's accomplishment of becoming Champion, heading towards the Ruins of Conflict. At the ruins, the two will thank Tapu Koko for saving the player and Nebby at the start of the game. Tapu Koko will immediately challenge the player to a battle. Four options are given to the player, which will affect Lillie's dialogue depending on the result of the battle: Defeat Tapu Koko, Catch Tapu Koko, lose to Tapu Koko, or Run. Regardless of outcome Tapu Koko will provide the player with a Tapunium Z, the Z-Crystal that can be used with the guardian deities for the Guardian of Alola Z-Move. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, this order of events never occur and Tapu Koko can be battled at any time in the games' post story. In all four titles Tapu Koko will respawn after the player defends their title until Tapu Koko is obtained. Also in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, if Tapu Koko is the first of the four tapu to be defeated, it will drop a Tapunium Z.

Tapu Koko makes a minor appearance in a photograph during Sun and Moon's credits sequence. It is seen racing against Hala and Hau.

Moves

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, after the player first becomes Champion, they visit the Ruins with Lillie during the ending. Tapu Koko challenges the player to a battle. The player can lose, capture, defeat, or run away from Tapu Koko, and the story will progress regardless of outcome. If defeated or run from, it respawns on the next visit after the credits roll. If defeated or run from again, it respawns after the player defends their title. On the first fight, Tapu Koko will drop a Tapunium Z after the battle.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Tapu Koko appears after becoming Champion instead. If defeated or run from, it respawns after the player defends their title. If Tapu Koko is the first of the four Guardian deities fought, it will drop a Tapunium Z after the battle.

It is coded to never be Shiny, regardless of game version.
