History

Mewtwo Strikes Back

While Ash and his friends were having lunch at the beginning of the movie, Raymond approached them and asked Ash for a battle. Although Ash had just told his friends that he was too weak to do so, he jumped up, ready to battle. In the Japanese version, Ash said he was just going to have a quick battle before lunch.

Despite Raymond's eagerness, Ash successfully knocked out all five of his Pokémon in rapid succession. In fact, Pikachu took out three of those Pokémon in one Thunderbolt when Raymond tried to unfairly gang them up on him. Raymond was stunned by the defeat, such that in the Japanese version, he exclaimed "Oh my God!!!" in English. The match also caught the attention of Mewtwo's Fearow, and this led to Ash being invited to New Island.

Notably, Raymond had a then-unknown Generation II Pokémon when he appeared: a Donphan.

Trivia

  • Raymond shares his name with his Japanese voice actor.
    • This voice actor and that of Miranda also work together in a Pokémon-based band.
    • In the manga adaptation, Raymond instead appears as a direct caricature of his voice actor.
  • In The Art of Pokémon The First Movie and the Ani-Manga adaptation of the film, he is simply named "Pirate Trainer". The closed captions of the remastered version of the movie call him "Raymond".
    • The film's remake gave Raymond a redesign that had him resemble a pirate even further, including elongating his vest to resemble a trenchcoat and giving him dreadlocks and a beard resembling that of Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
  • In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Pikachu defeated the part Ground-type Golem with Thunderbolt, which should have had no effect. This error was eliminated in the remake, as Golem was replaced in Raymond's party by a Drowzee.
