The Art of Pokémon The First Movie

The Art of Pokémon The First Movie is an artbook first published by Shogakukan in Japan and then released by VIZ Media in English. It is based on the film of the same name and the Pikachu short Pikachu's Vacation.

The Art of Pokémon The First Movie consists of a narrated written adaptation of the film accompanied by full-color screen captures from the movie. There are also character biographies and a "Pokémon Data File" with information on various Pokémon and technology that appeared in the movie.

Differences between the movie and the art book

  • Raymond is simply called Pirate Trainer and Dr. Fuji is called The Professor.
  • The giant structure Mewtwo created on New Island is called Pokémon Palace.

Trivia

  • Most of the scenes in this book, even in the English version, are from the original theatrical version, not the kanzenban edition that included scenes that were specifically reanimated for North American audiences. This is likely a result of the theatrical version's images being used in the original Japanese publication of this book, rather than an error on VIZ Media's part.

Errors

  • Mew is accidentally shown to be a "New Specie" instead of "New Species" Pokémon.
  • Marill is erroneously stated to be a "Balloon" instead of "Aqua Mouse" Pokémon.
  • Marill's name is misspelled as "Marril" throughout the book, which was common in North American media before the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver. On page 59, it is further misspelled as "Merril".
  • Togepi's gender is stated as male.
  • Snubbull's name is misspelled as "Snubble".
  • On page 50, Horsea's eyes are completely red.
