Characteristics

Defensively, the Poison-type is quite useful. The Poison-type is often combined with Grass or Bug, removing its Ground weakness, and Bug also assists it against its other weakness, Psychic. It resists itself (and cannot be poisoned as well), Bug, Grass and Fighting, making some Poison-types (such as Weezing) decent counters to physical sweepers, which are commonly Fighting-types.

Offensively, the Poison-type is considered one of the worst types. It is only super effective against one type, Grass, many of which are half Poison themselves, what nullifies their Posion weakness. On the other hand, it is resisted by Ground, Rock, and Ghost and completely ineffective against Steel. The only advantage of Poison type moves is that most of them may poison the opponent, unless the foe is also Poison-type or Steel-type, in which case it will not be able to be poisoned, although it is possible to poison a Steel-type through Twineedle in Generation II.

Trivia

  • Acid is the only damage dealing Poison-type attack that does not have a chance to poison the opponent.
  • With the exception of Arceus holding a Toxic Plate, there has yet to be a Poison-type legendary Pokémon.
  • Poison is the first type encountered in National Dex order, an honor it shares with the Template:Type2.
  • Posion has the dubious honor of being one of three types that will never be 4x super effective against any Pokémon because it is only super effective against one type, the Template:Type2. It shares this trait with the Template:Type2 which is only effective against itself, and the Template:Type2. However, the latter shouldn't be counted as it isn't super effective against anything. It should also be noted that in Generation I, Poison was super effective against Template:Type2s, making Paras, and Parasect, 4x weak to Poison.
  • Poison was the most common type in Generation I.
    • Almost two thirds of the Poison-type Pokémon are from Generation I.
