In the [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series|Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games]], the player character is a Pokémon. Classically, the player chooses their character by a quiz, but in the [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare)|Adventure Squad]] games and [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity|Gates to Infinity]], the character can be chosen manually; in later games, it can be chosen by either method. After choosing their character, the player also chooses a partner from the remaining Pokémon, so long as it is not the same [[type]] as the player. Up until [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky|Explorers of Sky]], the partner can only be selected from [[first partner Pokémon]] or {{p|Pikachu}}.
