Ash arrives on Trovita Island prepared to battle for his third Orange League Gym Badge. However, much to Ash's dismay, the Gym Leader Rudy has more than just battling on his mind. <!-- Detailed synopsis goes here. -->
The episode begins with Ash, Misty, and Tracey riding on a ferry that will take them from Mandarin Island South to Trovita Island. Ash is thinking only of winning his third Orange Island Gym Badge. As the ferry approaches Trovita Island, Ash asks about the rock pillars that surround the island, and Tracey explains that they formed millions of years ago when the island rose up out of the ocean. Misty wonders what the Gym Leader will be like and Ash remarks that it doesn't matter because he is going to win.

Just then, Pikachu hears something. The gang look to find a young girl and a Seel drowning in a whirlpool! Wasting no time, Misty takes Staryu and heads off to rescue the girl. Ash soon follows with Lapras and Tracey remains on the ferry.

Team Rocket spot the ferry from their Magikarp submarine but are sucked into the whirlpool.

Misty rescues the girl and, once safely on Lapras, instructs her never to swim alone because the current may get too rough. The girl is immediately enamored by Misty's kind heart.

Meanwhile, on a cliff overlooking the bay below, a worried young man had been calling for Mahri, the little girl with the Seel. When he sees Misty rescue the girl, he runs down to the pier, followed by an entourage of four other men.

The young man reunites with Mahri, who is revealed to be his sister. He personally thanks Misty for saving Mahri and completely ignores Ash and Tracey. He is obviously smitten by her and calls her amazing. With a snap of his fingers, the young man orders his entourage to give Misty several bouqets of flowers. Another snap brings soothing music, and the young man asks Misty to dance.

She agrees and while they are dancing the young man compliments her ability as a Pokémon trainer. He asks her to stay on the island and instruct the other trainers in his Gym. Misty is shocked to find she is dancing with the Trovita Island Gym Leader, but Ash wastes no time challenging him to a match. He ignores Ash's request and continues dancing with Misty. Mahri pleads with her older brother to listen to Ash, and he finally resigns from dancing. The Gym Leader introduces himself as Rudy and does a showy dance move.

Rudy explains that before Ash can battle him in a Gym match, he must pass an attack test. Ash must use his Pokémon to attack and knock down all the targets that pop up as they ride on a high speed motorboat down a river. Ash agrees and calls on Pikachu to use Thundershock to destroy the first target. Ash starts to brag but finds Rudy paying more attention to Misty than to him. Ash calls on Charizard to take down the next target, but it fails to obey. Before he can recall his Pokémon, Charizard has already fried Misty a little. Both she and Rudy reprimand Ash for calling on a Pokémon that he cannot control.

Team Rocket appear in the submarine and begin their motto. A target pops up in front of them, however, and Ash uses Squirtle's Watergun to take it down, inadvertedly sending Team Rocket blasting off again. Ash finishes the test by using Pikachu, Squirtle and Bulbasaur to knock down the rest of the targets.

That evening at the Pokémon Center, Rudy confirms that Ash passed his attack test. He schedules a three-on-three Type battle for the following day. Ash chooses Electric, Grass and Water elements, meaning both trainers have to use one of each type.

Rudy then invites Misty to join him for dinner. Mahri says that her older brother is a great cook. Misty happily agrees, leaving Ash, Tracey and Pikachu feeling a little left out.

Still at the Pokémon Center, Ash and Tracey contact Prof. Oak. Ash updates him on how his training is progressing and Tracey show him a sketch of a Pokémon he had never seen before. Ash then sits down for a less-than-medicore dinner.

Meanwhile, Misty is just getting done with her meal. She thanks Rudy for fixing such a delicious dinner. Mahri suddenly shouts that she always wanted a big sister just like Misty. Mahri wants her to stay with her forever because she's the only girl at the Gym. Misty and Rudy obviously feel awkward because of Mahri's openness, so Rudy suggests that Misty gets introduced to the Pokémon at the Gym.

Once there, Misty is surprised to see the likes of Golem, Ninetales and Rhydon dancing to modern music. Rudy explains that it's not enough to just teach Pokémon a lot of attacks and that they should learn new and different skills because it helps them grow. Then, Rudy asks Misty to dance and she agrees.

Just as they are having fun dancing, Rudy asks that Misty stay on Trovita Island with them. They stop dancing and Misty looks confused. He asks her to think it over and give him the answer after the match.

(I'll have to finish this later, unless someone else wants to.)

* PM-103 was the name of the ferry that carried Ash and co. to Trovita Island. The initials appear to stand for Pocket Monsters and the number corresponds with the episode number.
* The mystery Pokémon in Tracey's sketch that he was showing to Prof. Oak is Elekid. Tracey asks if it could be a new Pokémon and Prof. Oak laughingly disagrees. This was meant to be ironic because the viewers knew that Prof. Oak's observation was incorrect. That is because by the time this episode first aired, most people already knew Elekid was a new Pokémon because it was featured in the movie short Pikachu's Rescue Adventure.

* Rudy says that Ash must knock down all the targets during the attack test in order to battle him, but even though Charizard fails to hit a target, Ash still passes the test.

* It should be noted that Mahri's relation to Rudy was not changed when this episode came to America. Contrary to popular belief, Mahri has always been Rudy's little sister--never his daughter.
