:I don't know where they got that translation, but it is not fully right. It is a combination of kami 神 (gods) and oku 奥. The last character means 'deep', as in the back of your house. However, it is often associated with the 'deep north' of Japan, which is what Sinnoh is based on. See for instance "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" 奥の細道 by Matsuo Bashō. As such Sinnoh translates to something like "The Deep North of the Gods". Makes even more sense when you consider Arceus and co.
