Rhydon manages to defeat LAapras, so Satoshi replaces Lapras with Charizard who manages to defeat Rhydon. Furious and disappointed in its performance, Giovanni begins stomping on Rhydon for its loss. Satoshi admonishes Giovanni for his treatment of his Pokémon which prompts Giovanni to explain why he formed Team Rocket and is the way he is. When he was younger, he got caught in a cave-in with his {{p|Nidoking}} and got trapped under rubble. His Nidoking was not trapped but it abandoned Giovanni and ran away, making him believe that Pokémon are no different from beasts. Mr. Fuji arrives at the gym and the object wrapped in cloth is revealed to be Giovanni's Nidoking's broken horn. The truth is that Nidoking left to seek help from Mr. Fuji but was fatally injured and died soon after. However, Nidoking's journey was not in vain as he managed to get the help to save Giovanni from his injuries. | ||
This revelation broke Giovanni as he knows Team Rocket is too big, knowing that he has gone well past the point of no return. However, Giovanni gives Satoshi the Earth Badge and promises to never appear before him again. When Satoshi is on his {{p|Charizard}}, {{Zensho|Shigeru}} comes and starts attacking his Pokémon. | |||
