Miki had been {{pkmn|training}} her {{p|Skarmory}} in the harsh mountains between [[Azalea Town]] and [[Goldenrod City]] for several weeks prior to meeting {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}}. She had defeated many {{pkmn|Trainer}}s, but was very eager to {{pkmn|battle}} {{type|Fire}} Pokémon in the hopes of teaching her Skarmory to overcome its [[type]] disadvantage. {{an|Brock}} found Miki to be very pretty, but Miki mistook him as a Trainer and thus challenged him, telling him to use a Fire-type. Skarmory successfully defeated [[Brock's Vulpix]] and later [[Ash's Cyndaquil]]. However, Ash believed that Cyndaquil could become stronger than Skarmory was if it could get its flame lit when needed. Over dinner Miki revealed that she follows an intense training schedule, and Ash went on to adapt it to help his Cyndaquil become stronger and finally control its flame.

Miki decided to have a [[rematch]] against Ash to see how well his training had progressed, and Cyndaquil proved to be powerful enough to defeat Skarmory. Miki complimented Ash on his training, and she was inspired to start her own journey and take on the [[Johto League]] [[Gym Leader]]s.

Skarmory defeated [[Brock's Vulpix]], knocking it out with Steel Wing. Miki then told Brock to send out another Fire type, but Ash interrupted and sent out his {{AP|Cyndaquil}}. Skarmory used Fury Attack and Swift in the battle against Cyndaquil, nearly knocking it out. Skarmory was about to finish off the Fire-type when the two Pokémon were captured by {{TRT}}. It broke free easily with Swift, and was later sent Team Rocket blasting off, freeing Cyndaquil in the process.
