They can be traded for many rare [[item]]s.

When the {{Gdis|Battle Tower|II}} was introduced in {{game|Crystal}}, each time a group of seven {{pkmn|Trainer}}s was defeated, the attendants would award the {{player}} with five [[item]]s at random, such as {{DL|Vitamin|HP Up}}. The difficulty of winning made acquiring large numbers of [[vitamin]]s expensive without [[cheating]]. In {{game|Emerald}}, with the first sighting of the {{Gdis|Battle Frontier|III}}, the concept of Battle Points was introduced instead.

The first Battle Points that a {{player}} could earn in Pokémon Emerald came from [[Scott]], who would give them away on the player's first visit to the {{gdis|Battle Frontier|III}} depending on how many times he and the player interacted throughout the game. After this, more could be won by challenging, and defeating, the various facilities. These could, in turn, be exchanged for rare items for a [[Secret Base]] or even [[move]]s that could be [[Move Tutor|taught]] to a Pokémon.

In {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s}}, the concept was retained, even though the battle arena was restored to merely a {{Gdis|Battle Tower|IV}}. This time, [[EV-enhancing item]]s were included, as well as rare [[evolution-inducing held item]]s. The {{Gdis|Battle Frontier|IV}} in {{v2|Platinum}}, {{2v2|HeartGold|SoulSilver}} also features this. In addition, a limited amount of BP can be awarded once per day at the [[Trainer House]]. The [[Frontier Access]] features shops similar to the previous Battle Frontiers, where BP can be cashed in for items and moves.

In [[Generation V]], the purchasable items are very similar to those in [[Generation IV]]. However, nearly all purchasable items cannot be found anywhere else in the games and are only obtainable by exchanging BPs. Also, new items were added and the price of [[TM|Technical Machines]] went down, despite the fact that they are only obtainable once and their price in [[Poké Mart]]s went up.

In {{game|Black and White|s}}, Battle Points are awarded in the [[Battle Subway]]. In {{2v2|Black|White|2}}, in addition to being used in the Battle Subway, BPs are also awarded in the [[Pokémon World Tournament]]. They can be shared between both facilities. In Black 2 and White 2, players also receive BP after winning in the [[Global Battle Union]] or [[Global Terminal|Random Matchup]].

In [[Generation VI]], Battle Points can be obtained in the [[Battle Maison]] and in the [[Battle Institute]]. Unlike in previous games, they are received after every victorious match. The amount received varies depending on the length of the current winning streak.

It's also possible to receive Battle Points from one's [[Pokémon Bank]] account, instead of [[Poké Mile]]s.

In [[Generation VII]], Battle Points can be obtained in the [[Battle Royal Dome]] and the [[Battle Tree]].

Additionally, in {{g|Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon}} only, the player can play [[Poké Ride|Mantine Surf]] to earn BP (referred to as Beach Points here) at the Surf Spots in [[Big Wave Beach]], [[Heahea Beach]], [[Ula'ula Beach]], and [[Poni Beach]].
