Markers are objects that players use during a Pokémon TCG match to indicate certain elements of the game state. They are obtainable via official Pokémon Trading Card Game merchandise.

Information

Design

Markers released for the Pokémon Trading Card Game consist of a variety of materials. Often the ones included as part of introductory products are made from cardboard and punched out of a sheet. Other products instead provide markers made from plastic, acrylic, or metal. The fronts of markers have symbols indicating what the marker is used for in game. Markers with the same purpose do not necessarily have the same color; there are multiple instances where a later release of the same marker has a different design and color. One example of this is the GX marker, which was initially released in blue, but has alternate red and yellow versions in later sets.

The backs of markers usually contain copyright information for the Pokémon brand.

Gameplay

Markers are used to indicate specific changes in the game state that persist over multiple turns, easing the need for players to remember the events of prior turns. The Special Conditions Burned and Poisoned are indicated by putting a Burn marker or a Poison marker on the afflicted Pokémon. Each player is only allowed to use one   attack and one   Power per game. To indicate that this permission has been used, the GX or VSTAR marker is flipped face down after performing the respective action.

List of Markers

The following is a list of markers released throughout the history of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

In the video games

Pokémon Trading Card Game Online

As the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is based on the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game, the game utilizes markers in the same way.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Live

As the Pokémon Trading Card Game Live is based on the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game, the game utilizes markers in the same way. However, GX and VSTAR markers are not depicted in the game as markers. Instead, they are incorporated into the game interface. The GX and VSTAR symbols are displayed as part of the interface. After using a GX attack or VSTAR Power, they glow and then are crossed out for the remainder of the game. VSTAR Powers use a yellow glow. The GX symbol is not displayed in formats where no cards have GX attacks, such as in current Standard formats.
