Biology
Biology
Physiology
Slugma is a limbless gastropoda mollusk Pokémon composed of magma. Its body is bright red, fading to a duller red along its extremities. It has large, round, yellow eyes with small pupils. Slugma's head is ovoid with flame-like extensions spreading upward from its eyes and round, stable drops of magma dangling from its upper jaw. Its lower body is irregular in shape, and occasionally emits bubbles.
Slugma are fiery Pokémon that appear to consist entirely out of magma. They appear to resemble slugs, with a pair of bright yellow eyes on short stalks and a small mouth. The magma inside its body acts as a circulatory system, transferring vital nutrients and oxygen throughout their bodies. These Pokémon have to constantly keep moving to keep the magma in a liquid state - if it cooled the magma would harden and turn to rock.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Slugma's circulatory system is composed entirely of magma, which delivers vital nutrients and oxygen to its organs. To prevent its body from cooling and hardening, Slugma neither sleeps nor ever stops moving. If its body does begin to cool, it will become brittle and may break apart. Slugma constantly seeks warm places and gathers with other members of its species in List of Pokémon by habitat and volcanoes. Slugma takes magma baths to heal itself. It is believed that when volcanoes were more active in ancient times, Slugma were seen more often.

Behavior
Evolution
Slugma have to keep moving in order to keep warm; if they stopped moving, the magma would cool and become rock, which would eventually break off and reduce this Pokémon's size. For this reason they never sleep.
Slugma evolves into Magcargo.

Habitat
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data&rarr;Evolution data.)

<div style="float:center; display:flex; flex-flow:row wrap;">
Naturally, Slugma prefer warmer regions where they can keep their magma hot, so they are often found in volcanic regions.

NPC appearances
It is not known what these Pokémon eat, but they presumaly consume soil and rocks to both keep the volume of their magma and collect vital nutrients for their bodies.
*Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky: In the Special Episode Today's "Oh My Gosh", two Slugma are summoned by Haunter to fight Sunflora at the Spring Cave.

In the anime
Slugma made its debut in the anime as one of Macey's Pokémon in Tie One On! and was used in her battle against Ash in the Silver Conference. At the end of the episode it had evolved into Magcargo.

A Slugma also appeared in What You Seed is What You Get.

Flannery had two Slugma named Mag and Meg, one of which evolved to Magcargo in Poetry Commotion!.

Trivia
Trivia
* Slugma and Magcargo are the only Fire-type Pokémon that are in the Indeterminate.
* Despite being a Generation II Pokémon, Slugma was actually native to Kanto in Gold. The same is true for Murkrow and Houndour.
* It is one of the only two non-Rock Pokémon to learn Rock Slide via level-up (the other being Camerupt). However, it does evolve into a Rock-type.
** Additionally, while Murkrow and Houndour are catchable in Johto via the Johto in HeartGold and SoulSilver, the only possible way to get a Slugma before obtaining the National Pokédex in HeartGold and SoulSilver is to receive it from Primo as an Egg; it must otherwise be traded in or transferred from a Pokéwalker linked to a game that has already unlocked the National Pokédex.
* Despite multiple Pokédex entries claiming that it never sleeps and is on the move constantly, it can learn Rest, and is perfectly capable of sleeping.
* Slugma has the lowest base stat total of all Fire Pokémon.
** Its Emerald Pokédex entry contradicts its other Pokédex entries by stating it has to sleep near magma, instead of stating that it doesn't sleep at all.
** Slugma also has the lowest base Special Defense stat of all Fire-type Pokémon.
* Despite being a Generation II Pokémon, it was actually native to Kanto in Gold. The same is true for Murkrow and Houndour.
** Slugma is tied with Torkoal, Litwick, and Camerupt for the lowest base Speed stat of all Fire-type Pokémon.
* Slugma and its evolved form, Magcargo, are the only Fire-type List of Pokémon by shape.

Origin
Origin
It is based on a slug.
Slugma appears to be based on a slug with a body of lava. It may also be based on the Cherufe, evil creatures of rock and magma that inhabit the magma pools found deep within Chilean volcanoes. Slugma's shiny form may be based on cooled, hardened magma, which becomes a dark, metallic color. The form may also be based on solder, a liquid metal that is extremely hot and hardens when it cools, similarly to lava.

Slugma's shiny2 form may be based on cooled, hardened magma, which becomes a dark metallic color.
Name origin
Slugma may be a combination of slug and magma.

Name origin
Magmag may be a combination of magma and slug.
