The Great Marsh is an area located right to the north of Pastoria City. It is the main attraction of Pastoria City that gets many visitors and Trainers coming from around the area. The Great Marsh contains some {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} that cannot be found elsewhere in Sinnoh. It is filled with [[marsh tile|marshy areas]], which are inhabited by wild Pokémon. Much like other Pokémon preserves in [[Kanto]] and [[Hoenn]], the Great Marsh features a Safari Game in which Trainers pay {{PDollar}}500 for 30 {{ball|Safari}}s and a limited amount of steps (500) to catch as many Pokémon as they can. When a [[wild Pokémon]] appears, no Pokémon may be sent out to battle it: catching Pokémon here, as in all [[Safari Zone]]s, requires sheer luck. There are four options in the battle screen: Throw a {{ball|Safari}}, throw Bait, throw Mud, and [[escape|run away]]. Throwing Bait makes a Pokémon less likely to run, but makes it harder to catch; while throwing Mud does the reverse, making it easier to catch but more likely to run. Each day, a special type of Pokémon which can only be found on one day, will change, therefore, to get a new set, players must wait a day. These Pokémon will appear randomly in one of the six areas, some may not appear for a while, while others appear several days in a row or in multiple areas on the same day. Some may not appear until after getting the National Pokédex. The only way to tell which changing Pokémon is available in the areas for the day is to use the lookout upstairs from the entrance.

The Move Reminder allows {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} to relearn any [[move]] that they were able to learn at an earlier [[level]] than the one they are currently at, or ones from that level. Certain Pokémon have moves that may only be obtained in this fashion. The Move Reminder resides in a house northeast of the Poké Mart and will teach a Pokémon a move it could have previously learned but has not, in exchange for a Heart Scale. These may be obtained from [[The Underground]], from the man in the [[Pokémon News Press]]{{sup/4|Pt}}, or from wild {{p|Luvdisc}} after the [[National Pokédex]] is acquired.

The Scarf Guy lives in Pastoria City, in the house nearest to the {{rt|213|Sinnoh}} exit. The Scarf Guy checks a Pokémon's [[Contest condition|condition]] to see if it is worthy of a [[Scarf]]. If the Pokémon's condition is at its maximum value in an area, he will give out the corresponding Scarf to that Pokémon. If not, he will tell the player to improve its condition with [[Poffin]]s. The Scarf Guy lives with his sister and a {{p|Pachirisu}}. His girlfriend is the [[Massage Girl]] in [[Veilstone City]], whom he keeps in contact with through mail, which he lets Pokémon deliver.

The Pastoria Gym is the official [[Gym]] of Pastoria City. It is based on {{type|Water}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. The [[Gym Leader]] is [[Crasher Wake]]. The Pastoria Gym is a large indoor swimming pool comprised of three levels and numerous floating platforms. Switches on the floor of the pool raise and lower the water level. To get to the Gym Leader, the switches must be hit in a certain order so that a path will be formed with the floating platforms. For defeating [[Crasher Wake]], Trainers receive the {{Badge|Fen}}, {{TM|55|Brine}}, and the ability to use {{m|Defog}} in {{2v2|Diamond|Pearl}} and {{m|Surf}} in {{v|Platinum}} outside of battle.

In {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s}}, the population of Pastoria City is 47, which also happens to be the same number as [[Sunyshore City]].

{{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} first arrive in Pastoria City in ''[[DP082|Cream of the Croagunk Crop!]]'' where Ash demands to have a Gym battle but is refused one due to the Crasher Wake’s role in the [[Pastoria Croagunk Festival]]. The city’s residents honor Croagunk as guardians of the Pastoria [[Great Marsh]] and treat them with massive respect. Each household raises one Croagunk with great reverence and care and each year all people gather at the festival to choose the year’s Croagunk champion. The winner receives a crown encrusted with a beautiful diamond and pearl. In the episode, the Croagunk champion was Nurse Joy’s Croagunk, defeating the defending champion, [[Hamilton]]. In ''[[DP083|A Crasher Course in Power!]]'', Ash wins his Crasher Wake, earning him the {{badge|Fen}}.

 

 

Pastoria City first appeared in ''[[PS365|Crafty Carnivine]]''. {{adv|Diamond}}, {{adv|Pearl}} and {{adv|Platinum}} decided to visit the [[Great Marsh]] to play the [[Safari Game]], based on the recommendation of [[Crasher Wake]]'s Gym trainers. After being unsuccessful in the Safari Game, Platinum settled on borrowing [[Tru]] from Diamond for the battle with Wake.

* In Platinum, if the player stands behind the Croagunk Wall with the player's head sticking out of it, a wild {{p|Croagunk}} will come, but it will just cry and walk into the Great Marsh building.

* Standing right outside the Move Reminder's house is a man who claims to be standing "smack-dab in the middle of town." However, according to the map, he is placed four steps down and five steps to the right of the true center of town.
