Google Play (formally Android Market) is a digital distribution service owned and operated by Google and is the official app store for the Android operating system. Along with Android apps, the service also sells movies, TV shows, books and music, and offers Google Play Music subscriptions that allow unlimited music streaming. The service is linked to Google's online video-sharing platform YouTube; movies and TV shows purchased on Google Play are watchable on YouTube, and subscribers to YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium get a free Google Play Music subscription.

The Android Market launched on October 22, 2008[1] and rebranded as Google Play on March 6, 2012[2]. It is the official app store of Android, and as of March 2020, it had 2,870,000 apps available for download[3].

Movies & TV

Google TV launched in May 2011 as Google Movies[4], and rebranded with the rest of Google Play in March 2012 as Google Play Movies[2] (later becoming Google Play Movies & TV and then Google TV in September 2020).[5] It is possible to purchase or rent movies in in over 110 countries and TV shows are available to purchase in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States[6]. Purchases and rentals are viewable via the Google Play Movies & TV app, the Google Play website, the YouTube app or the YouTube website.

Music

Google Music launched publicly on November 16, 2011, after a six-month closed beta[7], and rebranded to Google Play Music in March 2012[2]. The service offers music for sale, as well as a subscription service that allows for unlimited listening to its music library for a monthly fee. It has been confirmed that Google Play Music is to be replaced with YouTube Music[8], with the shutdown of the service and the music store taking place between September and October of 2020.[9] Google Play Music was available in 63 countries at the time of its closure[6] via the Google Play Music app and web player.

Books

Google eBooks launched on December 6, 2010[10], and rebranded to Google Play Books in March 2012[2]. The service offers eBooks and audiobooks for sale, and allows users to upload up to 1,000 of their own eBooks. The service is available in 73 countries[6] via the Google Play Books app and website.
