This card was originally released in the {{TCG|Base Set}} as a {{TCG|Trainer card}} with artwork by [[Keiji Kinebuchi]]. This print was later included in the English {{TCG|Base Set 2}} and {{TCG|Legendary Collection}} reprint sets, as well as the {{TCG|Nivi City Gym}}, {{TCG|Tamamushi City Gym}}, and {{TCG|Yamabuki City Gym}} theme decks in Japan. It was later reclassified in the {{TCG|Black & White}} expansion as an {{TCG|Item card}} with new artwork by [[Kent Kanetsuna]], originating in the {{TCG|Beginning Set}} and {{TCG|Black Collection}}. It was later printed again in {{TCG|Beginning Set +}} and {{TCG|Beginning Set Pikachu Version}} rereleases of the original Black & White Beginning Set. Another English print was included in the {{TCG|Plasma Blast}} expansion, first originating from the Japanese {{TCG|Blastoise + Kyurem-EX Combo Deck}}.

Energy Retrieval was again reprinted with new artwork by [[5ban Graphics]] as one of the {{TCG|XY-P Promotional cards}} and was released within the Xerneas • Yveltal Card Box on December 13, 2013.
