Synopsis

It is the decisive match for the Tri Badge at the Sanyou Gym for Ash Ketchum. Ash had made the decision to challenge all three Gym Leaders and had only secured one victory: the match against Pod and his Baoppu with Tepig. Having lost one match to Corn and his Hiyappu when they defeated Pikachu, Ash must now win this battle in order to prove his worthiness of the badge. Will he be able to do it?

The sunlight grows strong above the gym as Yanappu gathers light with the sprout on its head. Shaping the collected energy into a ball, Yanappu moves it to the side of its body, pulls back, and fires it at Oshawott. Now taking on the form of an arrow, the SolarBeam snakes through the air as Oshawott stares in disbelief, its eyes wide open. Ash calls out to Oshawott, but...

Quickly, Oshawott grabs its keratin shell on its belly and sticks it out - the SolarBeam now hits the shell, the force of the impact so strong that Oshawott was sent backwards into the rocks - Oshawott angles his shell, and the SolarBeam deflects upwards, its power now returned to the sky... The crowd stares in disbelief; the cheerleaders, and the three Gym Leaders themselves gasp in awe as they witnessed the remarkable feat performed by the Sea Otter Pokémon, while Iris, from a distance, silently supports its achievement.

Dent, his opponent, was full of praise for Oshawott, but nevertheless Ash was not completely over the moon - he still had to finish the battle. Yanappu starts off with a flurry of Bullet Seed attacks, but Oshawott once again, deflected them with ease, its shell acting as a shield. Confident, Ash commands Oshawott to use Shell Blade.

Oshawott readies its shell - it glows blue for a while, before Oshawott jumps up and prepares to strike Yanappu. However, the Grass Monkey Pokémon would not let that happen. Quickly, it fires another flurry of Bullet Seeds at Oshawott in mid-air, and Oshawott, once confident, now falls into panic and disarray. As the Water Pokémon struggles, it loses its grip on its sea-shell shaped appendage, and the shell flies to the edge of the field, propelled by the momentum of the incoming Bullet Seed.

Oshawott falls to the ground, and its supporters (Ash, Pikachu and Iris), are now shocked by the thought of what is to come. Under the command of its trainer, Oshawott gets up and attempts to retrieve its fallen shell, but was blocked by another flurry of Bullet Seeds fired by Yanappu. As Oshawott attempted to dodge the seeds, it was eventually hit by one, and it was made semi-conscious.

Dent then announces a phrase or a slogan of his: "Its Tasting Time!", and the cheerleaders go wild with excitement. In his dreamy-like Pokémon Sommelier state, he briefly mentions about how Ash uses simple, deducible attack patterns and has no compatibility with Oshawott, unlike the bond he shares between him and his Yanappu. He ends off with a simple pose and the cheerleaders again go wild with excitement.

Dent then comments on Ash's poor choice of Pokémon with regard to type compatibilities. Ash explains that typing does not matter, and immediately, he pulls a stunt: he asks Oshawott to aim its Water Gun at the wall. As the observers including Oshawott itself gasped at such a command, nevertheless, Oshawott carried out specifically. Its Water Gun ricochet off the wall, between the rocks and towards its shell - the shell flew into the air, and Oshawott caught it. With that, he readied another Shell Blade attack, and this time, it managed to hit it target; Yanappu was caught by surprise and limped backwards.

Dent tells Yanappu to use Bite. At that instant, Ash tells Oshawott to use Shell Blade, and both Pokémon rush towards each other, ready to attack. Immediately, a bang was heard, and both Pokémon seemed to have delivered a glancing blow; they faced away from each other and stood there, motionless. For a moment it seemed like both Pokémon were still capable of attacking, but it was Yanappu that gave way: it could not endure any longer and fainted, causing Dent to feel shocked and sending a wave of disappointment through the group of cheerleaders.

Oshawott sits on the ground to rest. Ash is now victorious, having defeated two of the three Sanyou City Gym Leaders.

The three Gym Leaders, Dent, Pod and Corn, award Ash the Tri Badge. Turning to Iris, Ash tries to show off his badge, but she teases him, telling him how he tried to be different by challenging all three Gym Leaders when he was not supposed to, and using Pokémon of incompatible types to battle. Ash was annoyed. He then rebukes Iris by challenging her to a Pokémon battle, but she refused, seemingly embarrassed. Dent steps in and talks about the two's 'flavor', and Iris subsequently scolds Ash for being a 'small child', not knowing what 'flavor' is. As Dent questions if the two are traveling together, Iris gives a big 'NO' and turns to leave, leaving Ash and Dent puzzled.

Meanwhile at an old abandoned area, three cloaked figures are standing in the middle of open ground, investigating the demolished Site of Dreams. The Team Rocket trio, Jessie, James and Meowth, begin their mission by assembling a machine to collect data to be sent back to their headquarters. As the machine rumbles and kicks into life, the surrounding area glows bright pink; the disturbance caused by the machine forces a dormant Pokémon awake, and a Munna from elsewhere senses it, causing its eyes to glow and itself to shiver in fear.

Ash arrives at the Sanyou City Pokémon Center. As he hands his Pokémon over the counter, he addresses the Nurse Joy as the one whom he met at Karakusa Town. However, she corrects him, telling him that she is the older sister of the Joy at Karakusa Town, and shows him her family photo: three rows of identical Joys crowded together within the small frame. As Nurse Joy questions if he came from a Gym battle, Dent affirmatively answers from behind, and requests to talk to Ash.

Seated in a corner of the waiting area where an old man is feeding his Meguroco and a small girl is brushing her Minezumi, Dent begins his conversation with Ash. He subsequently questions Ash fervently with regard to their previous battle, before a confused-looking Ash was called on to receive his Pokémon. A Tabunne appears with Ash's Pokémon, and Ash soon learns from Dent that Nurse Joy has a Tabunne helping her within the Pokémon Center. Ash checks his Pokédex.

Suddenly, Iris rushes into the Pokémon Center, her Kibago glowing pink as she carried it to Nurse Joy. She exclaims that the city is emitting pink light, and as Kibago was exposed to the light, it too started glowing pink and fell asleep. At that moment, a lady in lab coat, together with her Munna, runs into the Pokémon Center. As she saw Kibago, she quickly asked Munna to wake Kibago up, and the Dream Eater Pokémon complied: it started consuming the pink cloud surrounding Kibago.

As soon as Munna was done, the floral patterns on its body glowed for a while, before she expelled a dense cloud that was to be Kibago's dream. Kibago finally woke up, and as it watched its own dream, it saw itself running, before evolving into an Onondo, and finally, an Ononokus. The lady then introduces herself as Professor Makomo.

Leading Ash, Iris and Dent outside, they find the city covered in pink, and Prof. Makomo explains that it is actually Musharna's Dream Smoke. Ash checks his Pokédex for Munna's evolved form, Musharna.

A police car stops in front of the group, and Officer Jenny alights from the car, telling Ash to return Pikachu into its Poké Ball so that it would not come into contact with the Dream Smoke. Ash reveals, to Iris's and Dent's surprise, that Pikachu does not like to go back into its Poké Ball. Prof. Makomo then had an idea: she places Ash's hat over Pikachu. She then reassures Dent that Munna will be all right from the smoke's exposure, and suggests going to the Site of Dreams.

As the group travels in Officer Jenny's car, they discuss about the Site of Dreams. Before the explosion that had occurred, the Site of Dreams was originally a research facility for Pokémon Energy, and it was investigating the possibility of harnessing clean energy through Musharna. However, such a research became popular and many people ambitiously wanted rights to the project. As Musharna had to eat dreams in order to develop the energy, it absorbed the negativity of such thoughts and intentions, and thus, facing a great deal of pressure, it was unable to take the stress and caused an explosion. Musharna then disappeared and the research ceased.

Prof. Makomo then talks about how she came to Sanyou City when Munna detected Musharna's presence. As they drive further down to the outskirts of the city, they soon notice strong pink light emitting from behind the trees in front of them.

The Team Rocket trio are extremely pleased with the amount of data they are receiving. While they delight in the success of their mission, a police car suddenly draws to a stop behind them, and the group emerges. Immediately, Prof. Makomo realize what was going on: the machine Team Rocket is using is causing residual energy to react strongly. As Officer Jenny questions who the three of them are, the trio break into their motto, and reveal their identities.

As the Team Rocket trio announce that they are using the residual energy at the Site of Dreams to fuel Team Rocket's ambition of taking over Unova, Prof. Makomo became disappointed at the thought of being involved in such a research project. Dent then reminded her that reason she came to the Site of Dreams was because of the connection between Munna and Musharna, and Munna agreed. Seemingly in response to their answer, the ground trembled and lightning bolts rose to the sky to form a pink veil; Musharna called out in response.

While the Team Rocket trio were thinking about capturing Musharna, the source of the residual energy, the group called out to Musharna. For a moment there was no response, but a gap soon opened in the veil, and a sphere, glowing with pink light, materializes in front of them. As Musharna appeared, Prof. Makomo rushes up to meet with it, but was stopped short by beams of blue light that was shot by Team Rocket's machine.

Grabbing Munna to the safety of her arms, Prof. Makomo watches with Ash as the machine traps Musharna with green light. Realizing it was quite safe for Pikachu to do without the hat, Ash returns the hat to its rightful position on the top of his head and tells Pikachu to use Volt Tackle. As the Electric Mouse charges itself with electricity, more blue beams shot forth from the machine and attempts to stop it from advancing. Prof. Makomo then tells Munna to use Psychic. As the machine crumples against itself, Pikachu rams it head on with Volt Tackle, causing the machine to explode and Musharna to be freed. Immediately, the pink veil disappeared.

Jessie now sends out her Koromori. With a Gust attack aimed at the ground, it causes a wall of dirt and dust to form, obscuring the group's vision. A while later, the dust settles, and the Team Rocket trio are now nowhere to be seen.

Prof. Makomo is now reunited with her Mursharna and she embraces it with her arms, trying to make up for what Musharna had gone through. While she thank Ash and the group, Dent goes into his Pokémon Sommelier state and dreamily talks about Prof. Makomo and her Murshana's 'harmony'.

Meanwhile, Giovanni announces that the Team Rocket trio had completed their mission: the data gathered from the Site of Dreams have been successfully transmitted and is sent for analysis. He then tells them to wait out for their next mission.

At the Sanyou City Gym, Dent announces that he decides to travel with Ash, and bids his fellow brothers farewell. While Ash and Dent have decided on their next destination, Iris shows up and decides to travel with them, and the three of them now make their way to the Gym in Shippou City.
