My first blackout was while fighting Brock. After losing, I leveled up Elvis (Nidoran ♂) up one more level and of course then it learned a move supereffective against Rock-type. I defeated Brock's Geodude pretty quickly and was close to defeating Onix when suddenly Onix used Bide and OHKO'd Elvis. I had two other Pokémon: a Pikachu whose only attacking moves did no damage against Onix, and a Lv.4 Nidoran ♀, Mercury. I sent out Mercury and slowly got rid of the little HP Onix had left. It instantly shot up 4 levels.'' | |||

I expected that I needed to grind a ton to defeat him, as most of my Pokémon were around level 21 and his Raichu was 28, but I decided to feel things out to see what level I'd need to be. I got through the puzzle and challenged Surge with my level 22 Nidoqueen, and his strategy was awful: keep spamming Growl, every so often using Thunderbolt, Mega Kick, or an X Speed. The Mega Kick was the one thing I needed to worry about, but I had 10 Super Potions and he only used it once. Slowly I whittled down Raichu's HP and got the Thunder Badge. Shortly after, I got a bike and went to Diglett Cave to get Flash, and ran into a level 29 Dugtrio!
