(There's no reason to think Celesteela's design is in reference to SELENE. They look nothing alike. They're just both based on the same story.)

Celesteela's body is based on bamboo shoots, it's arms on cut bamboo trunks, and it's overall shape and description resembles a {{wp|space shuttle}}. This is in reference to {{wp|The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter}}.
Celesteela may be based on both {{wp|The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter|Princess Kaguya}} and the spacecraft {{wp|SELENE}} (nicknamed "Kaguya" in Japan), which orbited the Moon between 2007 and 2009.
