Biology
Biology
Physiology
Entei is a massive, lion, quadrupedal Pokémon with some mastiff qualities. It is covered in brown fur and a long, light gray cloud of smoke running along its entire back. It has gray plates on either side of the cloud and a plate beneath the cream belly fur on its chest. Entei has gray paws with brown pads and black cuff-like bands on its legs. Both front paws house three small, white retractable claws, which can be seen in battle or in Pokémon Camp. Its main faceplate is red and shaped like fins or a six-sided star. A gray plate, resembling a horseshoe mustache, covers its muzzle. It also has a yellow crest with three sloped points on its forehead and red eyes.
Entei is a massive lion-like Pokémon with some mastiff qualities. It is covered in brown fur with a long, thick mane covering its neck. It has gray plates surrounding the cape that makes it look as if smoke is coming out of a crater on its back, and a plate beneath the cream belly fur on its chest. Entei has white paws with apparently retractable claws and brown paw pads, and black cuff-like bands on its legs. It has a red face with a white plate that resembles a handlebar mustache on its face, and a three-pointed yellow crest on its forehead. Entei's head appears to resemble a kabuto, a samurai helmet.

It is said that an Entei is born whenever a new volcano appears. It is also said that whenever Entei roars, a volcano erupts somewhere in the world.

Gender differences
Entei is a genderless species.

Special abilities
It is said that an Entei is born whenever a new volcano appears, and that whenever Entei roars, a volcano erupts somewhere in the world. Entei races across List of Pokémon by habitat at high speeds. It does this due to being unable to contain its extreme power. Entei is believed to represent the passion of magma, and is claimed to be the bringer of the summer's warmth. Entei can unleash massive bursts of fire capable of destroying anything it touches. Its fire is said to be hotter than the magma of a volcano. Entei loves Entei Treats made by Snacksworth, who once ran into and chased it in the past. Gouging Fire shares a resemblance to Entei. It is theorized to be an ancient Entei regenerated from a fossil.
Entei can shoot flames that are hotter than volcanic magma. It also sports limited mental powers. When it roars, it can make a volcano erupt on another part of the globe.

Behavior
Entei races headlong around the land.

Habitat
As a member of the legendary beast trio, Entei are constantly on the move with no set place to settle in. However, it is speculated that Entei (as well as the other legendary beasts) is not a unique species, as some Pokédex entries rumor that an Entei is born every time a new volcano is born and, at a point in Pokémon Ranger, Solana or Lunick says "Wow! An Entei!" rather than saying "Wow! Entei!"

Major appearances
Entei (M03)
Entei was a major character in the movie Spell of the Unown. In the movie, an illusionary Entei appeared to Molly Hale after she made a wish on the Unown.

Entei (M13)
A shiny Entei appeared alongside Celebi, and the other members of its trio in the thirteenth Pokémon movie, Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Other
A real Entei first appeared in the episode Entei at Your Own Risk.

Minor appearances
A mirage Entei was used by the Mirage Master in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon.

Entei made a small cameo at the opening of The Rise of Darkrai and Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

A Entei appeared in a TRT fantasy in An Egg Scramble.

In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
Entei was awakened by Yellow along with its two counterparts, and the three raced around Kanto and Johto looking for Trainers to help them defeat the Masked Man to free Ho-Oh. Entei eventually pairs up with Blaine, and later Silver. In this manga, Entei's fire has a healing effect, burning away disease and evil auras. It is also the move capable of permanently melting away the Masked Man's moving ice sculptures, which typically repair themselves from any attack. After it saves Silver and Gold's lives after their defeat against the Masked Man in the Lake of Rage, Blaine uses this fire to burn away the Mewtwo cells infecting his arm, and DJ Mary's Smeargle copies this power using Sketch. Once the Masked Man is defeated, Entei once again joins its comrades and roams the land of Johto once again. It has not been seen since.

Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl
When released from a Poké Ball, Entei unleashes a volcanic Fire Spin that deals a lot of damage to any opponents that get trapped in it.

In Melee, Entei is also featured in the Event 26: Trophy Tussle 2 where it is used as a stage akin to the Poké Floats stage. If the player is the last one standing, the player receives an Entei trophy.

Melee trophy information
A volcanic Fire-type, Entei is hotter than liquid magma and as tough as nails. This powerful creature was one of the three Pokémon running around the Burned Tower of Ecruteak City. Entei is extremely difficult to capture, as it tends to wander all over the landscape, sprouting intense flames from its body.

Brawl trophy information
"A Volcano Pokémon. When Entei barks, a volcano erupts, and it's said that a new Entei is born every time a volcano appears. A proverb claims that the warmth of summer is created by Entei racing through the clouds. Entei uses Fire Spin, a flaming vortex that traps and damages foes for multiple turns."

* Entei shares its category name with Quilava and Johtonian Typhlosion. They are all known as the Volcano Pokémon.
** However, the ash/smoke-like flowing mane on its back slightly resembles a tail.
* Entei has the highest base HP stat of all Fire Pokémon.
* Entei's number in the National Pokédex and the Johto Pokédex are the same: 244.

* Entei has the highest base HP of all Fire Pokémon.
** The same is true when switching to Espeon, when the Pokédex is sorted alphabetically.
* In Crystal, if the player plays Entei's cry in the Pokédex, then switches to Suicune or Raikou before the cry ends, the cry of Suicune or Raikou is changed.
* An unused event present in the data of Gold and Silver (but removed from Crystal) allows for the player to obtain a level 40 Entei.
* The order that the beasts appear in the National Pokédex is the order of the events that happened at the Burned Tower: the lightning that started the fire (Raikou), the fire that consumed the Brass Tower (Entei), and the rain that quenched the fire (Suicune).
* Entei's effort value yield of 1 HP and 2 Attack is unique.
* Entei's numbers in the National Pokédex and the Johto Pokédex are identical: 0244 and 244, respectively.

Origin
Origin
Entei is based on Chinese guardian lions, or Lions of Foo, creatures that resemble fully grown male lions. They are often confused with canines and incorrectly called "Foo Dogs" by Westerners. Their original significance was serving as guardians (like gargoyles upon churches) at Buddhist temples. The image of a ferocious beast would scare intruders away. This correlates with Entei being seen as a guardian in the third movie, protecting Molly and her allies.
When asked if Entei was based on a particular animal, Muneo Saitō described the creation process behind the Pokémon as "a hairy, rock-like body, volcanic smoke rising from behind its head, a king with a dignified beard... Entei's design was coming together... You could say it was basically like a lion... But I didn't want it to be simply an animal, so I settled on a silhouette that could look like a dog or a cat."

Like a real lion, Entei boasts a regal mane, long retractable claws, and a strong, bulky, yet agile body. Its face is short and bears resemblance to a lion's skull— short and wedged, but with the unique flatness that ShiShi statues also bore. The yellow design on its head could be interpreted as a stylized crown or a Kabuto helmet. In China, the lion is regarded as a symbol of power and strength. Lions are also popularly known as symbols of fire. However, Entei also resembles large short-muzzled dogs, such as a mastiff. Entei's brown shaggy fur and white paws and muzzle are similar to a St. Bernard, a large dog known for its strength. Its lion-like appearance, mask-like face, and masses of fur make it look like the Balinese lion spirit Barong (mythology), a guardian spirit who kills the wicked witch Rangda in order to maintain the balance of good and evil.
In particular, Entei has characteristics common with lions in traditional East Asian art. These include a human-like face, a crown resembling eyebrows or horns, and the back half of the flowing smoke resembling a fluffy tail. In many countries, the lion is regarded as a symbol of power and strength. Lions are also popularly known as symbols of fire. Entei's lion-like appearance and masses of fur make it appear similar to the Balinese lion spirit Barong (mythology), a guardian spirit who kills the wicked witch Rangda in order to maintain the balance of good and evil. However, it also resembles large short-muzzled dogs, such as a mastiff. Its brown shaggy fur and white paws and muzzle are similar to a St. Bernard, a large dog known for its strength.

Entei's roar is known throughout the Pokémon world as a sign of a new volcano erupting, and a new Entei being born. Entei may also have some inspiration from the Aterui, the chief of the Emishi, who was later labeled as a demon called 'Aka-gashira' (Red-Head). It also has the appearance of a volcano, its head is volcano-shaped and has a bright yellow eruption-flame on the top, and the red magma is seen on the side of its face, it has volcanic smoke leaving from the back and has two spiky mountains on the back.
Entei visually resembles an erupting volcano. Its red faceplate and yellow crown resemble lava, its neck shape and brown coloration are reminiscent of the base of a volcano, and it has a cloud of flowing smoke. Its face also resembles a kabuto and the backplates resemble mountains.

Fire Entei corresponds to the fire that burned Brass Tower according to its legend; at the same time Raikou represents the lightning that struck it, and Suicune represents the rain that put it out.

Name origin
Name origin
Entei may be a combination of 炎天 enten (blazing heat) or 炎 en (flame, an alternate reading of honō) and 皇帝 kōtei (emperor). It can be written in kanji as 炎帝 (identical to the Chinese Yan Emperor).
Entei may be derived from 炎 en (flame) and tei (emperor), forming a reference to 炎帝 Yándì (Yan Emperor, legendary ancient Chinese ruler in pre-dynastic times). It may also involve 炎天 enten (blazing heat).
