Rattata (Japanese: コラッタ Koratta) is a Normal Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Raticate starting at level 20.
It evolves into Raticate starting at level 20.

Biology
In Alola, Rattata has a dual-type regional form. It evolves into Alolan Raticate when leveled up at night starting at level 20.
Physiology
Rattata is a small, but unspecialized rodent. Its most notable feature is its large teeth. Like most rodents their teeth grow continuously throughout its life, and must be constantly worn down by gnawing. It has long whiskers and a long, slightly curled tail. Rattata has purple fur on its back, and cream colored fur on its stomach. This coloration (dark on top, light on bottom) is a common protective mechanism for many small animals.
Gender differences
A female has shorter whiskers.

Special abilities
(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)
Rattata have very basic survival needs, permitting them to thrive in nearly any environment. Because they reproduce so quickly, a pair of Rattata can quickly colonize an area. Rattata are also very quick, and their teeth grow constantly.

Behavior
It is the player's first Toy Pokémon in Pokémon Rumble and Pokémon Rumble Rush.
Rattata have a fast metabolism. As a result, it spends most of its fast-paced life looking for food. Thanks to their sharp fangs, they are able to eat nearly anything. However, because they constantly need to chew on hard material to keep their teeth at a manageable length, it is hard to tell if they are actually eating something, or merely gnawing on it. When they are threatened, Rattata can deliver a powerful bite. In addition to its highly unspecialized diet, Rattata will also build their nests virtually anywhere. They are a common sight in many places, and can become a nuisance due to their rapid reproductive rate. It is said that for every one Rattata, forty other are hidden somewhere. Most young Trainers will train Rattata due to their easy accessibility.
Habitat
Rattata naturally live in plains and savannas. However, they are found in most areas due to their ability to survive nearly any environment.

Diet
Biology
Pokémon food
Rattata is a small, quadrupedal rodent Pokémon. It has purple fur with a cream-colored face, paws, and underbelly. It has narrow eyes containing white sclera and pupil with red irises, rounded ears with cream-colored insides, and a single whisker on each cheek. Its long tail is tightly curled at the end. Its most notable feature is its large teeth. Like most rodents, its teeth grow continuously throughout its life and must be worn down by gnawing. This also ensures that Rattata is not awoken by the sound of its grinding teeth while sleeping. Females will have shorter whiskers.

Rattata are not picky when it comes to food, and will eat nearly anything edible. However, they're sometimes found in possession of the Chilan Berry.
Rattata can live wherever it can find food, which it searches for most of the day. Thanks to its sharp fangs, it is able to chew on nearly anything. When it is threatened, Rattata can deliver a powerful bite. Rattata constantly keep their ears up and will immediately scurry away from the slightest sound. Furret is the natural predator of Rattata. Its hardiness lets it live in many environments, although it mainly lives on List of Pokémon by habitat. Because it reproduces so quickly, a pair of Rattata can quickly colonize an area. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Rattata is known to sleep sometimes with a log in its mouth.

In the first episode of the anime series, Ash's Pokédex also states that Rattata "likes cheese, nuts, fruit and berries... [and will] steal food from stupid travelers."
Prior to Generation IV, Rattata and its evolved form, Raticate, were the only known Pokémon capable of learning the moves Hyper Fang and Super Fang.

In the anime
Forms
Rattata has a regional form: Alolan Rattata.
Major appearances
Rattata debuted in the first episode of the series, trying to steal food from Ash's bag.

A.J. has three Rattata, as shown in The Path to the Pokémon League.
Rattata are non-native to Alola and arrived in cargo ships. The Rattata population in Alola was booming until Yungoos and Gumshoos were imported as a control measure. In order to avoid these new predators, Rattata altered its habits. It moved to more urban areas, became nocturnal, and formed large nests led by Raticate. Alolan Rattata searches out fresh food by smell and ignores anything spoiled. It has even been known to sneak into people's homes to find food. It has dark gray fur and grayish-purple ear insides. There are two tufts of fur on each ear and near the tip of its tail. Its long, thin whiskers are replaced by shorter, thicker tufts of fur as well. The line where its cream underbelly meets its gray fur is ragged instead of smooth.

Casey also has a Rattata, whose only appearance was in The Double Trouble Header. It is unknown what became of this Rattata in her later appearances.
Evolution
Rattata evolves into Raticate.

Minor appearances
Alolan Rattata evolves into Alolan Raticate.
A Rattata was used by one of the students of the Pokémon Trainer's School in Gonna Rule The School!.

Rattata appeared in Team Shocker! under the ownership of a coordinator.
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Trivia
Trivia
* Rattata's name originally had a "K" at the end, but it was dropped.
* In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Rattata was originally known as Rattatak.
* Rattata is notorious for being associated with the F.E.A.R. strategy.
* Rattata is notorious for being associated with the F.E.A.R. strategy.
* Rattata and Raticate share the same species name with Pikachu, Raichu, Sandshrew, and Sandslash. They are all known as Mouse Pokémon, though Rattata and Raticate have also been called Rat Pokémon in Generations I and II. Rattata and Raticate's species name was changed to 'Mouse' in Generation III onwards.
* Rattata and its evolved form both share their category with Pikachu, Raichu, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Pawmi, and Pawmo. They are all known as the Mouse Pokémon, though Rattata and Raticate were originally called the Rat Pokémon prior to Generation III.
* Rattata and its evolution comprise the first two-stage evolutionary family in National Dex order.
* Rattata has gained notoriety among the fanbase due to Youngster Joey on 30, and his phone calls claiming his Rattata to be within the top percentage of the species.
* Out of all the Normal Pokémon found in the first route of each region (Rattata, Sentret, Zigzagoon, and Bidoof), Rattata has the highest base stat total.
* Rattata has the lowest base HP of all Normal Pokémon.
* Rattata is the first pure Normal in National Dex order.
** Alolan Rattata has the lowest base HP and Special Attack of all Dark Pokémon.
* Alolan Rattata ties with Morpeko for the shortest Dark-type Pokémon.
* Alolan Rattata may be considered a counterpart of Yungoos. They can be caught at certain times of the day (Yungoos at day, Alolan Rattata at night). They also evolve into Gumshoos and Alolan Raticate, respectively, at level 20 at their respective times. Also, their evolved forms are the Totem Pokémon in their respective games (Gumshoos in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Raticate in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon).
* Alolan Rattata and its evolution are the only regional forms that cannot be transferred out of HOME into any Generation VIII or Generation IX game.
* Together with Magikarp, Seedot, Ninjask, Pichu, and Goldeen, Rattata is the easiest Pokémon to catch in Pokémon Ranger, with only one loop necessary.

Origin
Origin
It is obviously based on a rat.
Rattata appears to be based on a rat or a mouse. Its large ears are similar to a Fancy rat#Body type.

Alolan Rattata appears to be based on the black rat, brown rat, or Polynesian rat, all of which are invasive species in Hawaii. Their attacks on sugar cane fields caused the locals to import the Small Indian mongoose into Hawaii as a form of pest control, explaining the relationship between Yungoos/Gumshoos and Rattata/Raticate. Its thieving behavior and tendency to work in groups under the command of a Raticate are reminiscent of a gangster. The shape of its whiskers resembles the knot of a hokkamuri — a cloth wrapped around the head and tied under nose as a form of disguise, typically worn by thieves in Japanese media for comedic effect.

Name origin
Name origin
Rattata's name obviously incorporates rat into it, and the etymology of tata is most likely a combination of rat and attack, especially when compared to its beta name, "Rattatak". Koratta is derived from the prefix 小 ko, small, and rat.
Rattata may be a combination of rat and attack, as indicated by its beta name. It may also incorporate rat-a-tat (a tapping sound).

Koratta may be a combination of 子 ko (child) or 小 ko (small) and rat.
