Starmie (Japanese: スターミー Starmie) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.
Starmie (Japanese: スターミー Starmie) is a dual-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Staryu by Water Stone.
It evolves from Staryu when exposed to a Water Stone.

Biology
Biology
Physiology
Starmie is an echinoderm Pokémon that resembles two violet starfish with five appendages each. The front starfish has a golden formation in the center. In the center of the golden casing is its red jewel core, which can glow in seven colors and has developed to resemble a cut precious stone. The second starfish is semi-attached to the back of the first and can spin 360 degrees. This rotational action is how Starmie swims through the ocean. It can also launch itself out of the water and fly through the air for short periods, as seen in Pokémon Snap.
Starmie, like its pre-evolved form, resembles a sea star. This time its main body is violet but it still retains the gold formation on its front. Starmie’s red jewel core is larger than Staryu’s and has developed to resemble a cut precious stone. The major change that took place upon evolution to Starmie was the growing of a second star on its back. It is semi-attached being able to spin 360°.

Gender differences
From its core, Starmie can emit electrical waves that are powerful enough to reach the furthest parts of the universe. The multi-color glowing of its core is also believed to be a method of communication with other members of its species. As seen in the anime, the core will go dark if Starmie is knocked unconscious and will sometimes flicker if Starmie is low on health. Because of its body shape and habit of sending transmissions skyward, some people believe this Pokémon to be extraterrestrial. It has been known to cause headaches on people when approached. It is rarely seen in the wild since it requires a rare evolution stone to evolve, but it can be found in the deepest parts of the List of Pokémon by habitat. It feeds by absorbing tiny plankton into its body while swimming, and it is preyed on by Lumineon.
This Pokémon is genderless.

Special abilities
Evolution
Starmie’s central core shines with the seven colors of the rainbow when looked at from different angles, but usually shows up red more than any other color. It can also emit electrical waves from the core that are powerful enough to reach the furthest parts of the universe.
Starmie evolves from Staryu.

It uses it second star to propel itself through the water and even to launch out of the water and fly through the air for short periods of time. This also allows it use attacks like Rapid Spin.
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Starmie still has all of the abilities of Staryu including re-growing limbs, changing its skins color and texture as well as using its core for energy attacks.

NPC appearances
* Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity: Starmie runs the Sunken Treasure mini-game in Pokémon Paradise. In this mini-game, the player collects black, blue and red treasure chests by tilting their Nintendo 3DS. Chinchou and rocks appear as obstacles in this mini-game, and touching them deducts one treasure chest, starting with black chests. Unlike Treasure Boxes obtained from dungeons, they are opened upon obtaining. Starmie's mini-game can be played once every in-game day.

Behavior
Pokédex entries
As Starmie, the Pokémon’s behaviors hint more and more to it being an alien from another planet. At night it becomes active, just like Staryu, although now it will send off mysterious radio signals while its luminescent core flickers.

Like most Pokémon, Starmie’s eating habits are unknown but it’s very probable it filter feeds considering the Pokémon’s lack of a mouth.
Held items
Pokémon caught in Generation I must be traded to a Generation II game in order for a held item to appear. In Emerald, Starmie can only be found in the Battle Frontier.

Trivia
Trivia
*Starmie is one of 7 Pokémon (the others being Staryu, the Legendary golems, and Zubat) that has no apparent eyes.
* Staryu was programmed to learn Egg moves in , but these moves were unobtainable because both Staryu and Starmie are gender unknown and so could only breed with Ditto. These moves were removed in Crystal.
*Its Generation II sprites show its central core to be purple. It may be that the game designers intended the core to mimic the color of the 'seastar' body, as with the shiny sprite, the core is a sapphire with the body being blue as well.
* Staryu, Starmie, and Mew are the only Pokémon species that are gender unknown but can legitimately learn Attract in Generation II. This move has no effect when used by these Pokémon.
** In addition, the core's color has been inconsistent throughout the generations. In Generation II it was purple, Generation III it appeared as bright red, and recently the core has changed to a mauve color. This may be to illustrate the core's affinity with glowing different colors.
* In the Japanese-exclusive Pokémon Stadium, Starmie seems to have originally been a lot more rubbery than it is now, as its limbs stretch whenever it is hit.
* Despite the recent 3D games (as well as Ranger), the anime has not shown the second star to rotate.
* Starmie is the only Psychic Pokémon in the Water 3.
* Regardless of being powerful and having a versatile movepool, as well as the appropriate secondary type, it has yet to be used by a Psychic Trainer, whereas many other secondary-typed psychics have found their way on psychic teams (for example, Sabrina's Exeggutor).
* Starmie is also tied with Floatzel for the fastest Water-type Pokémon with the base speed of 115.
* Despite being a genderless Pokémon, it was still able to learn egg moves in . This was fixed in Crystal where it could no longer breed with any Pokémon except Ditto.

Origin
Origin
It may just be a stylized seastar. But on account of the second star on its back, it bears resemblance to a crown of thorns starfish.
Starmie seems to be based on a stylized starfish such as the purple sea star (due to its color), the sunflower sea star (due to its many arms), or the Celerina heffernani (due to its color and central pattern, especially in its Shiny form). Like Starmie, many real starfish have the ability to Regeneration (biology) lost body parts. Given its ties to outer space and ability to emit light, it may also be based on literal stars and meteors. It is also reminiscent of ornate jewelry, with its central core resembling a faceted gem mounted inside a golden prong setting. The standard color of its gem resembles a ruby, while its Shiny color resembles a sapphire. Its tendency to rapidly spin its body is reminiscent of shuriken and propellers. Its gender unknown designation may be based on hermaphrodite, observed in some real-life starfish species.

Its ability to learn various beam attacks and the gem in the middle acting like a heart might also be a reference to the Ultraman series, where Ultra Warriors have similar gems on their chests that start flashing when they are weak, just like Starmie's gem as shown in the anime.

Name origin
Name origin
Starmie's name is derived from star, referring to its shape, and mie, which may be a misspelling of me, in opposition to the yu in Staryu. Its name may also involve 珠, which can be read as mi, meaning gem or jewel, obviously referring to its core.
Starmie may be a combinaton of star and mystery. Its name in English may also involve me (in opposition to the you in Staryu).
