The Altering Cave (Japanese: へんげのどうくつ Altering Cave) is a mysterious cave found in FireRed and LeafGreen, and Emerald.

The Altering Cave (Japanese: へんげのどうくつ Changing Cave) is found in FireRed and LeafGreen and Emerald. Only Zubat can be found in this cave, but it is possible for the Altering Cave's wild Pokémon to be altered by using Mystery Gift at a Wonder Spot hosted by Nintendo. Despite this, no country has ever held an event to make use of this hidden feature.
Only Zubat can be found in it. It would have been possible for the Altering Cave's wild Pokémon to be altered by using Mystery Gift at a Wonder Spot (hence the cave's name), but this data was never distributed.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, Altering Cave is found north of Fortune Island on Outcast Island. In Emerald, Altering Cave is found on 103, on the east bank of the pond that passes through the center of the route. The entrance of the cave is only open after becoming the Pokémon League Champion.
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen use standard wild held items for the Pokémon in Altering Cave; Pokémon Emerald uses a special set of held items exclusive to the event, which were programmed to have a 5% chance of occurring.

Trivia
Trivia
* All of the exclusive Pokémon can be found in the extended area of the Safari Zone in Emerald, except for Smeargle, which is found in Battle Frontier (Generation III) at the Battle Frontier. In addition, they are all available in Pokémon Colosseum as Shadow Pokémon, and were available via this method even prior to 's release.
* Had a distribution been held to change the wild Pokémon in Altering Cave, this would have been the only way to obtain the Berry Juice in Generation III, as wild Shuckle are programmed to always be holding it in FireRed and LeafGreen, and Shuckle and Aipom would have held it 5% of the time (in Altering Cave only) in Pokémon Emerald. Instead, the item is entirely List of unobtainable items in Generation III.
* While the Altering Cave's inclusion in FireRed and LeafGreen made sense due to the Mystery Gift-exclusive Pokémon being missing from those games, it is unknown why it was carried over to Emerald, where those Pokémon were normally obtainable elsewhere.
** It would also have been the only way to legitimately obtain Mareep that are under level 5 (Down to level 3) in Generation III, since all Pokémon in that generation hatch at level 5, and no other obtainable Mareep within Generation III are under level 5.
* The music for Altering Cave in Emerald is the same one from FireRed and LeafGreen, as Pokémon Emerald has all the soundtrack from FireRed and LeafGreen.
