The competition is identical to a regular {{wp|relay race}}. It consists of three legs and {{pkmn|Trainer}}s enter with three {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} that are able to either fly or float. The Pokémon that is flying carries a ribbon it has to hand over to the next Pokémon. Participants command their Pokémon from hot air balloons.
 
The Pokémon Sky Relay starts in an open area. The first leg goes through a forest and ends at the end of the forest. The Pokémon in the second leg make a circle through the valley, and then pass through a field of towering rocks. At the end of this, the third leg starts. The third leg is straight and relatively easy, allowing inexperienced Pokémon to be able to compete as well. However, it does pass through a valley with strong wind currents. The finish is at the same place as the start. The winner receives a cup.
