This happened because they all watched a Pokémon movie starring Pikachu, Mew, and Mewtwo (the movie is not identified in the plot, but the book is a tie-in to ''[[M01|Pokémon: The First Movie]]''). The Pikachu boy mentions at some point: ''"The movie was so much fun, we all turned into Pokémon!"'', and later ''"I guess if you really love a movie, you can turn into the star!"''
