+I tried battling between Emerald and FireRed, so, at least in FR/LG/E, they work that way. I don't own a copy of Ruby or Sapphire to test the rest of the games, though. And as for in-game mechanics changing, well, lots of things changed between the games of Gen IV, like {{m|Hypnosis}} and {{m|Blizzard}}.
