Typhlosion (Japanese: バクフーン Bakphoon) is a Fire-type Pokémon.

Biology

Typhlosion, in appearance, becomes much different than its predecessors; however, some resemblances remain. For instance, it is both a biped and a quadruped, like Cyndaquil and Quilava, respectively. The fiery vents on its back disappear, making way for a new ring of them around its neck and shoulders. It has several sharp teeth and primary fangs which can slightly extend from behind its wide lips, making it an easy task for one to hook fleeing prey and bringing them down. Its broad tail fur is presumed to give it optimum balance for instances when it chooses to stand on its hind legs. Removal of this fur, by trainer, battle mishap, or otherwise, may be detrimental to a Typhlosion's ability in battle during the time it takes to grow back.

Physiology

The fur of a Typhlosion is very coarse and highly flame-retardant, giving it an extreme resistance to heat and fire attacks. This may also be to keep it from injuring itself during battle when using attacks such as Flamethrower, or Flame Wheel. Many speculate on how a Typhlosion produces the fire it uses in offensive maneuvers; however, this author's theory suggests that several dry glands within its body are filled with oxygen and nutrient reserves. When they must, the walls of said glands rub together against the deposits within them and effectively produce frictional fire. The jaw structure of a Typhlosion is wide and gaping, creating an intimidating, almost grinning, oral expression. This is ideal for swift kills on hunting excursions and both offensive and defensive maneuvers.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Typhlosion is rumored to have an instinctual attack that it uses as a trump card, known as Eruption. This attack is produced by a Typhlosion first heating its body, then rapidly rubbing its thick fur together. As of yet, few trainers have witnessed this monstrosity of offense; however, one would assume that sending it into a battle in which its opponent is equally as strong would cause a Typhlosion to use this secret weapon to end the stalemate - hypothetically, to its own advantage. When a Typhlosion's health drops in battle, the Blaze ability comes into play. This gives its Fire-type attacks a boost of 1.5 times their normal power. Due to a slight shortage of Defense, one would send Typhlosion into battle against a Pokémon which uses mostly physical attacks if they hope to use a Blaze curve to their advantage. Several types of TMs can be incorporated into a Typhlosion's attack roster along with Fire. These types are as follows: Ghost, Psychic, Poison, Fighting, Steel, Flying, Rock, Ground, Grass, Dark, and Normal. Said TMs include the powerful Solar Beam (an excellent addition, if your Typhlosion has learned the recommended Sunny Day), Earthquake, and Arial Ace. It has high Special Attack stats, making it a good choice to learn special attack TMs.

Behavior

A Typhlosion's behavior may be described as, at the very least, explosive. Its tempermental and territorial behavior is not restricted to wayward Pokémon, only; when entering areas where Typhlosion are said to inhabit, trainers are advised to bring along Water, Rock, or Ground-type Pokémon with them - preferably ones with high Special Defense. Although this is good advice, it's also best to simply find a different route, as they are known to start blazing wildfires when they feel alienated. If a trainer manages to capture a Typhlosion, developing a bond with it is difficult. Typhlosion are very proud Pokémon, and don't take kindly to being removed from their natural habitat by a trainer - captured or not. It is best to simply capture a Cyndaquil and raise it with care, if one desires to have a strong bond with what will become their Typhlosion. A single male Typhlosion normally dominates a hoard of females; however, both female and other male Typhlosion may challenge the leader for its position in a one-on-one battle. The victor of the battle is allowed breeding rights with any others within its hoard. The defeated, if it cannot escape, is devoured by the hoard.

Habitat

Typhlosion are very adaptable Pokémon, making homes ranging from burrows in the plains, to caves around craggy mountain ranges. When the colder seasons arrive, their type alone is plenty to keep them safe until Spring arrives; their thick fur is also said to be very insulating. This may mean that a Typhlosion is able to hunt throughout Autumn and Winter without need for hibernation. They prefer to be in warmer climates, making their territory in places where sunlight is abundant and at their disposal when they're out hunting. Breeding Typhlosion will make nests within simple burrows; if intruders, such as Ekans or Zangoose, attempt to steal the eggs or their young for food, a Typhlosion will mercilessly defend both its territory and its young, even at the cost of its own life.

Diet

Typhlosion have several sharp canine teeth along their gumlines, leaving one with little to speculate about when it comes to what variety of food they prefer. They primarily feed on breeds of Pokémon with large amounts of flesh, such as Makuhita or Sealo. Once the prey has been killed, the Typhlosion will devour the spoils in a short amount of time. Parent Typhlosion, however, are known to roast kills with their own fiery attacks, presumably to protect their young from infection or contamination.

In the anime

Typhlosion's first appearance was in the The Legend of Thunder! special. It was Jimmy's main Pokémon.

The Volcano Pokémon also appeared in AG055 under the ownership of Old Man Moore, Flannery's grandfather.

In the manga

Gold's Quilava evolved into Typhlosion to protect Silver, Crystal, and himself from Lugia.
