[[Category:{{{type1}}}-type Pokémon|{{{ndex}}}]] Kingdra (Japanese: キングドラ Kingdra) is a dual-type Water/Dragon Pokémon.

It evolves from Seadra via trade with Dragon Scale. It is the final form of Horsea.

Biology

Physiology

Kingdra is a larger, more elegant version of Seadra. It has beautiful fins that wave in the water as it swims. Its head has a crest-like fin along its cheeks. Its head can also turn 360 degrees. Sometimes, a Kingdra leads a herd of Horsea and Seadra and protects it from danger. Its belly scales are now more compact, unlike Seadra. The snout has also become thinner and more powerful in squirting water jets with devastating power.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

The yawn of a sleeping Kingdra is powerful enough to create undercurrents capable of destroying small ships.

Behavior

Habitat

Kingdra are rare in the wild, and usually hibernate in deep underwater caves.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Kingdra is a carnivorous Pokémon, hunting for prey in the aftermath of a storm.

In the anime

Gym Leader Clair of Blackthorn City has a Kingdra that was used in Better Eight than Never!

Pokédex entries

Episode Pokémon Source Entry
EP216 Kingdra Ash's Pokédex Kingdra, the Dragon Pokémon. Normally at rest on the ocean floor, but in theories of high activity, even a yawn has enough power to create whirlpools.

In the manga

Silver's Seadra evolved into Kingdra when he traded it to Gold for Poliwhirl, which also evolved. The two then traded back, so that each would have their original, though evolved, Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Kingdra is the only non-legendary, fully evolved Template:Type2 Pokémon not to have a double weakness to Ice (or indeed, any weakness to Ice).
    • It is also the only fully evolved Dragon-type unable to learn Flamethrower.
  • Kingdra was the first Dragon-type Pokémon not to be part of the Dratini evolution family.
  • Though many of Kingdra's Pokédex entries state that it can create whirlpools, it can only learn the move via HM.
    • However, many of its Pokédex entries state it creates whirlpools by yawning, and it can learn the move Yawn.
  • Kingdra can rotate their heads 360 degrees.
  • Kingdra is the only Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II, and is, along with Misdreavus, the only Pokémon introduced in a generation in which there are no other Pokémon of one of its types.
  • Kingdra is often mistranslated to "Kingora" in the Chuang-Yi translation of Pokémon Special.
  • Kingdra is the only Pokémon to always be the main (highest levelled) of TWO Gym Leaders, namely Clair and Juan. While Pidgeot also falls under this distinction, it is only during Falkner's and Blue's rematches that this occurs.

Origin

Kingdra is based on a weedy sea dragon, although the fact that it dwells on the sea floor while creating whirlpools may be based on the mythical monster Charybdis from "The Odyssey", a greek epic poem by the poet Homer.

Name origin

Kingdra's name is a combination of king and dragon.

In other languages

  • German: Seedraking - From See (sea), Drache (dragon), and king.
  • French: Hyporoi - Comes from hippocampe (seahorse) and roi (king).
  • Korean: 킹드라 Kingdeura.
  • Chinese: 刺龍王
