Quotes

Pokémon Emerald

"Let me ask you. Did you know? Ah, I should not be so coy. It was I who taught Wallace everything there is to know about Pokémon. Once, I had given up my position as the Gym Leader. In my place, I had entrusted Wallace with the gym. However, a compelling reason arose for me to make a comeback. Ah, but enough chatter. Let us begin our match, shall we? Please, you shall bear witness to our artistry. A grand illusion of water sculpted by Pokémon and myself!"
(after battle)
"Ahahaha, excellent! Very well, you are the winner. From you, I sense the brilliant shine of skill that will overcome all. However, compared with me or even Wallace, you are lacking in elegance. Perhaps I should make you a loan of my outfit? ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Hahaha, I merely jest! Rather than my clothes, I shall reward you with this, the Rain Badge."
(rematch)
"Ah, this Gym had returned to its usual state of serenity... But our young typhoon has returned to put us to the test again! Well, my friend, most certainly! I shall be delighted to dance with you as often as you wish!"
(after battle)
"Ahahaha, you are the winner! You have defeated me again!"

In the anime

Juan is quite the celebrity type in Sootopolis, putting on shows with his Pokémon. He has many female fans, and is considered very dashing. In addition to being a Gym Leader, he is a former winner of the Grand Festival. He appeared in The Great Eight Fate and Eight Ain't Enough when he battled Ash, who won the Rain Badge after a tough battle.

He has a butler, Sebastian, who also serves as the Gym assistant.

Juan also makes a cameo appearance in a flashback in Playing the Leveling Field!.

Juan was once Wallace's mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Later, Wallace succeeded him as the Gym Leader after winning the Hoenn Pokémon League. When Hoenn got into the crisis because of the fight between Groudon and Kyogre, Wallace had to take up the place as the Champion and asked Juan to take over as the Gym Leader again.

He was the one who rescued Tate & Liza when they were trapped in Mack's fire illusion in Mt. Pyre, as well as Ruby and Sapphire when they were being blown away by the Groudon's and Kyogre's energy in Sootopolis. He brought all of them to the Mirage Island and requested Liza & Tate to train Ruby and Sapphire about double battle, in order to prepare the two trainers for the final showdown against Groudon and Kyogre. Juan himself also trained Ruby and Sapphire to increase their mental strength, so that they would not be controlled by the two Orbs, as Maxie and Archie had been.

As he had been Wallace's mentor, Ruby respected him right from the beginning and calls him "Great Master" (大師匠, dai shishou).

Juan would sometimes use French phrases like "Bonjour" and "Tres Bien".

Trivia

  • In the anime, Juan's tuft of white hair faces the opposite direction than his official art and sprites from Pokémon Emerald.
  • Juan's team in the anime is the same team Wallace uses in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
  • Both Juan and Giovanni are the eighth Gym Leader in a region introduced in an odd-numbered generation. Both of their names are a foreign version of the name "John".
  • Juan is the only Hoenn Gym Leader not to be shown with the same team in the anime as in the games (while some Gym Leaders had Pokémon evolve or join their team, all the previous leaders were shown with the same team as their game counterparts at one point). Instead, Juan has a Milotic from Wallace's appearance in the anime.
  • In the Latin American dub of The Great Eight Fate, Meowth and the narrator mention that Juan resembles the Mexican actor Rene Casados.
