With the Slowpoke safe, you are free to challenge your second Gym. The Azalea Gym is crawling with Template:Type2s, so if you chose Cyndaquil as your starter, you'll be in great shape. Other Trainers will have to rely on their Template:Type2s, like Pidgey and Hoothoot, to get the job done. Template:Type2s also have an advantage here, so this is a great time to give your Geodude or Onix some experience.

After defeating him, Bugsy awards you with the Hive Badge and TM49 (Fury Cutter), a weak Bug-type move that doubles in power for every successful hit. The Hive Badge commands attention from all of your Pokémon at level 30 or less, and also enables the use of Cut outside of battle.

With your shiny new badge, you're free to head through Ilex Forest on the way to Goldenrod City - until your rival shows up.

If the player chose Chikorita:   If the player chose Cyndaquil:   If the player chose Totodile:

Once he leaves, head on into Ilex Forest.

Ilex Forest

Ilex Forest

This large, shadowy forest is a natural maze. It has become so overgrown in recent years that a handful of new trees have sprouted up, but one has emerged near the Ilex Shrine, blocking the path through the trees. Without HM01 (Cut), no Trainers can make it through the hardy forest.

Rescue the wily Farfetch'd

Azalea's charcoal maker hasn't seen his apprentice since he went into the forest. You'll find him not far from the entrance; it seems that the Farfetch'd that they use to cut down the trees to turn into charcoal has wandered off, and gotten lost in the forest. It gets spooked easily, so you'll have to sneak up behind it to chase it back to the apprentice. Don't forget to pick up the Revive nearby. Once it's rescued, the charcoal maker shows up and rewards you with HM01 (Cut)! If you return to the Charcoal Kiln in Azalea, the apprentice will give you a Charcoal as thanks.

Since you already have the Hive Badge from Azalea Gym, you are free to explore the rest of the forest.

The Green-haired Guy

In the center of the forest, east of the small pond, is a green-haired guy that will give you a very useful TM. Talk to him to receive TM02 (Headbutt), a strong attack that also has a helpful function outside of battle. If you have a Pokémon headbutt one of the small pine trees scattered across Johto, you may knock a sleeping Pokémon out of the tree. This is the only way to find Pokémon like Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom, so put it to good use!

The Scent of Battle

Inside the forest's northern gate is a woman behind the counter with her Butterfree. If you speak with her, she will give you TM12 (Sweet Scent). This move can be used in the field to lure wild Pokémon to you, and also lowers the opponent's evasion during battle.

Exit the gate to Route 34.

Route 34

Route 34

This short route connects Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City, but one of the most important areas in the game is located here. The Pokémon Daycare, like its counterpart on Kanto's Route 5, allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly couple. Any Pokémon left here will gain 1 EXP for every step you take. However, the Johto Daycare accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once. If both a male and female are left together, you may return to find that the old couple has found an egg. Keep the egg in your party like you did with Mr. Pokémon's Togepi, and it will hatch a few hours later. This is the only way to get more members of a certain species (like Eevee) and the new "baby" Pokémon (like Pichu)! If you don't have a compatible male-female pair, than track down a Ditto - that shapeshifting blob can mate with almost anything. If you talk to the Daycare Man with an empty slot in your party, he will give you an Egg that will eventually hatch into one of the new baby Pokémon.

Head north to reach Johto's tech-mecca, Goldenrod City.

Later...

Return to Route 34 once you can surf. Swim south from the Daycare to find a small path leading into the trees. A trio of Cooltrainers will challenge you, and defeating all three gets you a Soft Sand, which strengthens Template:Type2 attacks.
