In the anime
Absol first appeared in Jirachi: Wish Maker. The Disaster Pokémon showed up to take Jirachi back to Forina. However, Absol wasn't the true villain of the movie. It was Butler, because he wanted to forcibly extract Jirachi's power to create a Groudon.
The Disaster Pokémon also appeared in Absol-ute Disaster. The people of a town were blaming Absol for all the bad things that were happening to their town during the past month. Ash and co. (along with a boy named Nicky) went out to search whether or not the accusations were true. They found out that the Absol were actually warning the town about a flood.
Drew captured and trained an Absol for the Kanto Grand Festival.
An Absol had appeared in Mutiny in the Bounty, captured by the evil Hunter J and her henchmen after Ash's Pikachu, Melodi's Gardevoir and Team Rocket's Meowth got stolen. The Absol was returned to its rightful owner after Ash, Team Rocket and Melodi reunited with their Pokémon, and after some of J's minions were arrested.
In the manga
An Absol appears in the Ruby and Sapphire arc of the Pokémon Special manga. It first appears to Ruby, who shudders in fear immediately. Absol is also present in the feud between Kyogre and Groudon. Like in the anime, Absol is accused of bringing disaster.

Trivia
- Despite being associated with bad luck, Absol can have the ability Super Luck. This can also be ironic as shown in the anime (Absol-ute Disaster) and the manga (Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Team).
- The effect of this ability--increasing Absol's critical hit ratio--means that it is actually bad luck for Absol's opponents.
- Despite Pokédex entries which state it can sense calamities, it cannot have the ability Anticipation.
- Absol's Sucker Punch is the strongest increased priority move, by base stats.
- Absol has the highest Attack of any non-legendary Pokémon that is not a part of an evolutionary family.
- Absol shares some similarities with Tropius:
- Both were introduced in Generation III.
- In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, each were only found on one route, each route having heavy rainfall and their northern exit leading to Fortree City, each with a low appearance rate (Absol is on Route 120 and Tropius on Route 119).
- Neither one is involved in an evolutionary line.
- Both of their type combinations are fairly uncommon (Absol, Poochyena, Mightyena, Umbreon, and Darkrai are the only pure Dark-types, and Tropius shares its Grass/Flying type combination with just the Hoppip evolution family and Shaymin's Sky Forme).
- Both of them were made into Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum, at a level in the high forties (Absol at 48 and Tropius at 49), and both were found in Realgam Tower's colosseum.
- Both of them have a curved object or objects attached to their heads (Absol has a sickle on top of its head, and Tropius has a bunch of banana-esque fruits hanging underneath)
- Both of them had only one ability when first introduced in Generation III, but were given a second one in Generation IV, with the english name of the ability starting with the letter "S", and consisting of two words. Also, in both cases, this ability was exclusive to Absol/Tropius, and a two-member evolution family, where the lowest form was introduced in Generation II, where the type or types does not change, where at least one type is shared and where the usage of an evolution stone is required (Absol, Murkrow, and Honchkrow are the only Pokémon with Super Luck, all of them are Dark-type, and Murkrow uses a Dusk Stone to evolve into Honchkrow. Likewise, Tropius, Sunkern, and Sunflora are the only Pokémon with Solar Power, all three are Grass-type, and Sunkern uses a Sun Stone to evolve into Sunflora.. Interestingly, Murkrow and Honchkrow are Flying-type and Sunkern and Sunflora are not, the opposite of Absol and Tropius's situation).
- Both are quadrupedal.
Origin
Absol may be based on the Barghest, a monstrous black dog in English folklore. Seeing one was believed to portend imminent death or misfortune, but unlike the Barghest, Absol warns people about disasters. It may be also be based on the black cat superstition. Absol is also similar to the mythical Mothman, not because of physical appearance, but its presence is a warning of disaster. Its independence, habitat, and body seem to be reminiscent of a cougar. Absol's head is modeled after a Taijitu ("yin-yang").
Name origin
Absol's name may be derived from 物騒 bussō, dangerous, but much debate exists over the true origin of its name. One common theory is that it is a combination of ab-, a prefix meaning away/from, and sol, meaning sun. This could imply that Absol is away from the sun, reinforcing its Template:Type2 nature. It could also be a shortened form of "absolute", referring to the absolute nature of its species, disaster.
