On the official Japanese Pokémon website, from as early as 2002, a [https://web.archive.org/web/20021201103601/http://www.pokemon.co.jp/game/notappear.html webpage titled "Pokémon not appearing in the games"] (ゲームにでてこないポケモンについて) that explained that {{p|Mew}} and {{p|Celebi}} are Mythical Pokémon that do not appear in the games, instead only being obtainable via Nintendo events.
