(Connecting to the replacement Wiimmfi servers doesn’t require any modification to the game or DS, so yes, it’s substantially different from linking to a ROM. All that is done is changing one DNS setting in your Nintendo DS WiFi settings, and it restores the original experience of Nintendo WiFi Connection to exactly what it was prior to the official shutdown of GameSpy’s servers.
