A symptom of a battery running dry is the game's inability to keep track of the time correctly (the [[error message]] '''TIME NOT SET''' may also appear on the title screen).

There exist two methods to replace a cartridge battery without losing the save file:
# This method requires an external battery pack and a 3V replacement battery - most often a battery holder with two AA or AAA batteries connected in series. One can solder the auxiliary battery to two terminals on the pcb.  The terminals must be determined with a multimeter and following the traces on the pcb. The goal is to find two locations near the battery that have a 3V potential difference and solder the auxiliary battery pack to those terminals. After doing so, we have essentially connected two 3V batteries in parallel (the original and the auxiliary), after which we can safely swap out the cartridge battery to a new one. Remove auxiliary battery afterwards.
# This method requires a gaming device (GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance), replacement battery, and optionally an 3V battery pack - most often a battery holder with two AA or AAA batteries connected in series. First the top plate of the cartridge must be removed and the cartridge (which at this point consists of the pcb battery side up and the plastic bottom cover) inserted into the handheld device. It is unclear at which point the device loads the memory so safest is to switch the game on and click "continue" and be properly in game. Now that the game is running and the battery is exposed the game data is actually store in the memory of the device, not the cartridge, so we can simply replace the battery. After replacing battery there should not be a need to save, but just in case removing the battery changed data in the cartridge memory, it is best to overwrite the save before turning off the device. For this method it is easiest to use GameBoy Advance, because the battery is fully outside of the device and nothing needs to be done to the gaming device. Using GameBoy or GameBoy Color involves removing the back cover of the device so that the battery portion of the cartridge is fully exposed while the cartridge is inserted into the device. This often involves soldering an auxiliary battery pack onto the device's battery terminals because the battery holder is a part of the back cover that was removed to fully expose the cartridge.
