Ok, I noticed sometimes in battles, especially horde battles that there are sometimes rocks in the background. These rocks will break when a certain move is used, and depending on what kind of rock. For example, damp rocks will always be found in the aftermath when surf is used and there is a grey-blue rock pillar in the background, which topples over and breaks in half.
