Generation V's Pokédex is relatively similar to Generation IV's. Due to Generation V having no Pokémon that were exclusive to a particular time, this function does not exist, though it is indicated whether a Pokémon is found by fishing, walking in tall grass or surfing. A season window appears on Pokémon which change area's during the seasons, (e.g. Walrein). An area in which the Pokémon can be found flashes red and by touching an area, the corresponding symbol on the upper screen lights up. Interactable, in-game trade and gift Pokémon are not listed in the Pokédex. The height and weight comparison feature has been removed, but a component showcasing male and female form differences side-by-side is added by Cedric Juniper when the player visits Mistralton City as well as a search feature. The forms feature will also show the shiny version of the Pokémon; the last sprite selected will become the one displayed in the main entry. The back sprite of a Pokémon can also be viewed in this Pokédex. If the player obtains a Pokémon from another country, they can select a language for the entry. Shiny forms can also be viewed and compared with the regular appearance of the Pokémon, providing that the trainer has met both. The Poké Ball symbol maintains its previous function in that it shows that the Pokémon has been caught, a a blank circle means it has been seen but not caught.
The Generation V Pokédex is similar to the Pokédex from Diamond. It is displayed as a list on the right side of the lower screen with the selected Pokémon's sprite occuping the left side. Most of its functions are also similar to Generation IV's. Instead of showing the time of day that a Pokémon can be caught, as in Generation IV, the Pokédex shows the seasons in which it can be found. Areas in which the Pokémon can be found flash red, and touching an area will show the methods by which it can be caught (walking in tall grass, surfing, or fishing). The height and weight comparison feature has been removed, but a section showing form differences and a search feature are added by Cedric Juniper when the player visits Mistralton City. The form difference section will now show Shiny Pokémon as well as form differences. The last sprite selected will become the one displayed in the main entry. If the player obtains a Pokémon from another country, they can select a language for that Pokémon's entry. The search function has also been improved with the ability to search Pokémon by color as well as the older criteria. The cry page has been added again as well.

The properties of searching on the Pokédex have changed in many aspects. Color may now be included in a search due to each Pokémon being newly assigned a "color" of it as well as the functions included in earlier generations. The button for searching now says "start" as opposed to "search" as it did in other games.

The Pokédex may also be registered in Generation V, similar to the Trainer card, Stats, and other features normally less easily accessible.

When selecting Pokédex from the menu, the top screen turns grey and the bottom screen shows a Poké Ball symbol, on it's side but instead just red or just pink, which can be customized with skins downloaded from the Pokémon Global Link website for free. To use the Pokédex itself, push the right arrow, the A button or tap the touch screen. It then functions like a normal Pokédex.
