Gen 3 games dont use sram. they use flash ram for saves. This is why the battery running out doesn't wipe your save file. Here's a site that backs me up: https://reinerziegler.de.mirrors.gg8.se/GBA/gba.htm (its pretty ugly but look under the "Flash ROM (512KBit or 1Mbit)" heading).
