The Battle Frontier is a special post-league area featured in in the Generation IV games, Platinum, . It is similar to the Battle Frontier featured in Emerald, the Hoenn Battle Frontier. The key difference is the number of facilities and the challenges they hold.
Professor Oak's Laboratory, also called the Oak Pokémon Research Laboratory, is a Pokémon lab located in Pallet Town that is directed by Professor Samuel Oak and, in the anime, his assistant Tracey Sketchit. Its functions are to research Pokémon, unravel the mysteries of these creatures, and study their characteristics and behavior in a natural environment. Another important job is to take care of the Pokémon that belong to Pallet Town's trainers.

This Frontier is found in two regions, Sinnoh and Johto; each region's Frontier is identical in facilities and appearance. The Sinnoh Frontier is located north of the Fight Area in the place of Diamond and Pearl's Battle Park. The Johto Frontier is located west of Olivine City, where the Battle Tower was located in Crystal. Access to Johto's frontier is through the Frontier Front. Each of the facilities in the Battle Frontier has a leader, the Frontier Brain, who may be challenged after certain winning streak (sports) have been made through their respective facilities. Defeating the Frontier Brains will earn the player commemorative prints.
The lab has many different environments for the correct development of all kinds of Pokémon. They are areas of grass, sand, rocks and lakes to promote good interaction between the different types of creatures. The laboratory has the technology to keep Pokémon healthy, and to make the largest scientific investigations in the country.

Only two of the facilities had been featured in Pokémon games prior to the Battle Frontier's debut in Platinum. The Battle Tower and Battle Factory were both present in Emerald; the Battle Tower has been in every game since its debut in Crystal.
Professor Oak's Laboratory appears in Red, Gold, and FireRed and LeafGreen. In Generation I, it is where Oak gives the player their starter Pokémon and a Pokédex.

In the anime, the laboratory debuted in the first episode, Pokémon - I Choose You!, when Ash received his Pikachu. Since then, it has been seen in many episodes, mostly in the start and ending of a region adventure, but also in Pokémon Chronicles and in the movies. The building stands out in Pallet Town for its wind turbine, the three windows of the inner balcony, and for the four windows of the second floor. Every time Ash captures a Pokémon when he has six already with him, the new Pokémon is automatically transported here. Ash also has a habit of leaving all of his Pokémon besides Pikachu here each time he leaves for a new region, starting with Hoenn.
