This isn't very important important (perhaps trivia), but I'm surprised to see no mention of the unused Mew trade in Yellow Version. Pokémon Yellow beta#Unused in-game trades. ::I mean, Japanese Pokemon Red/Green and Japanese Pokemon Blue had different Pokedex entries for all generation 1 Pokemon. English Pokemon Red/Blue took some of them from each Japanese version. :It looks that, in the past, we used to keep Japanese Pokédex entries when new games had been released just in Japanese, not in English yet. For instance, please see this old 2011 revision of the Pokédex section from the Pikachu article. It contains this Pokédex text from Pokémon Black and White: "".
:Team Rocket Grunt seems to be proposing something along these lines, adding Japanese Pokédex entries for Pokémon Red and Green because they don't correspond with English G1 games.
:However, on the other hand, it looks like all the G1 Pokédex entries have been translated either in G1 itself or in FRLG. So, instead of adding Japanese text, maybe we could at least explain the localization changes like this in the Pokémon articles:
:* In the Japanese Red and Green, each Pokémon shares the same Pokédex entry. This entry was left untranslated in the localized Generation I games, until it was reused in Pokémon FireRed and localized into other languages.
:* In the Japanese Pokémon Blue, a new Pokédex entry was introduced for each Pokémon. This entry was translated for both Red and Blue, and also reused in Pokémon LeafGreen (sometimes with minor wording changes in the latter).
:* The Pokémon Stadium was not released in English, but it uses the same Pokédex entries as the later game Pokémon Stadium.

:::Having that written on each Pokemon's page would fix the issue for me, but as ForceFire pointed out, the same exact text would always be better wrote once. ::::Assuming the RG Pokédex entries hadn't been recycled and translated, then I'm definitely with Rocket Grunt (add Japanese entries with "fan-made" tooltip translations). (That's basically what that Pikachu was at that point.)
::::But now that they have, we could probably also have this somewhere in the mainspace, and call it a day.
::::(Also worth noting that I think Celadonkey has a good point, though it is my understanding that, generally, something/anything is still canon and worth covering even without any localization.) Nescientist (talk) 11:18, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
Mew's Name Origin
i think mew name comes from what cats say meow. which is sometimes righted mew (Helperman (talk) 14:34, 16 December 2021 (UTC))
:In fact, there's evidence that that's not the case. Nescientist (talk) 16:41, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
Basically that says "well they say nya in Japanese", which is true, but they do know the Anglicism "mew". Mew looks feline enough. If Japanese writers don't know the English onomatopoeia "mew", why is there a manga about a catgirl named "Tokyo Mew Mew"? == Re: Cat origin ==
So as of right now the article states that Mew appears to be based on domestic cats. Imo this is both too confident and not very accurate when looking at both the finer details and concept of the creature.
Points in favor of cat:
- The ears and face shape (although flat faces and small ears are common traits of prenatal mammals)
- The legs and feet, supposedly (to me these are not very cat-like as far as mammal legs go and are closer to something like a kangaroo or a rabbit)
- The long tail (again, there are more similar matches like the jerboa)
Points against:
- It has been officially stated to be based on Mewtwo's design, who is only cat-like if you really squint at it
- Its name is confirmed to not be based on a cat's meow/mew
- In-universe, it shares genetic traits of all Pokémon
The second list, to me, is stronger and is in favor of it being based on just a generalized embryonic or fetal creature, with no specific type of animal having any extra weight. This is clear in the original sprite and I do not believe Sugimori's softening of its features changes the design intent.
At the very least, "appears to be" is too strong of an assessment when we have Seel, a more clear-cut example of animal-to-Pokémon, using the "may be based on" wording.
