I understand your Occam's Razor argument, but given the importance of something like Ash's former Pokemon, it doesn't make any logical sense at all that the anime will bring Ash's former Pokemon back, which we see being used in a battle (albeit short), and make no big deal of it. Not even a subtle reference to it or mention it in any way whatsoever, which is precisely why occam's razor doesn't work in this particular case.
