Steven was first mentioned by his [[Mr. Stone|father]] in ''[[AG017|Stairway to Devon]]'' who claimed he would be a good person for {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} to know.

Steven is officially claimed as the Hoenn Champion in the anime like he is in the games. This implies that Wallace (who had been mentioned as the Hoenn Champion in the {{series|Diamond & Pearl}}) may have lost said title at some point before this episode.
