His first appearance in the anime was on the [[S.S. Anne|St. Anne]] in ''[[EP015|Battle Aboard the St. Anne]]'' selling {{p|Magikarp}} to anyone foolish enough to buy one. He would tell them that they would reproduce and make the buyer rich. [[James]] was foolish enough to buy one which later [[evolution|evolved]] into a {{TP|James|Gyarados}}. Some time after he appeared with the same "selling strategy" in ''[[EP146|Tricks of the Trade]]'' and ''[[EP201|Doin' What Comes Natu-rally]]''. Later, in ''[[EP261|Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid]]'', he would trade his [[List of Pokémon temporarily owned by the Team Rocket trio#Victreebel|Weepinbell]] for [[James's Victreebel]]. He has also appeared in [[Hoenn]], selling {{DL|List of Pokémon temporarily owned by the Team Rocket trio|Hoppip}} disguised as {{p|Chimecho}} when James was searching for a Chimecho. He was also selling Magikarp disguised as {{p|Feebas}} for a {{DL|Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime|Spoink}}'s [[Valuable item#Pearl and Big Pearl|pearl]] which {{TRT}} stole. Both of them were successfully sold to Team Rocket.

 

He is one of the main reasons why Jessie has a {{TP|Jessie|Wobbuffet}}. In ''[[EP146|Tricks of the Trade]]'', he tries to sell a Magikarp to James, but James recognizes him as the one who tricked him into buying a Magikarp on the St. Anne and chases after him, causing him to bump into Jessie, which sends her flying over to the trading machine. When she bumped into it, the Poké Ball containing her {{TP|Jessie|Lickitung}} fell onto the trading machine, trading it with {{OBP|Benny|EP146}}'s Wobbuffet, which he was trying to trade throughout the episode.

The Magikarp salesman offered Team Rocket to trade his {{p|Weepinbell}} for them so they could use its {{m|Sweet Scent}} to lure other Pokémon. After a short conversation, it was decided that James would trade his {{TP|James|Victreebel}} for Weepinbell. Later, the new Weepinbell evolved into a new {{p|Victreebel}}. But after it bit Jessie's hair, Jessie used her {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} to send it away. Later, James's new Victreebel met his old Victreebel, fell in love with it and disappeared to a forest along with it.}}

In {{4v|Black|White|2}}, the Magikarp salesman appears again on [[Marvelous Bridge]] to sell a Magikarp for {{PDollar}}500. However, unlike in Kanto, Magikarp are not native to [[Unova]] and can only be found in the [[Nature Preserve]]{{sup/5|B2W2}}. It always has a [[Stats|speed]] [[IV]] of 31 in these games.

* The Magikarp salesman was given a Hispanic accent in all of the dubbed episodes except for ''[[SS004|Showdown at the Oak Corral]]'' and ''[[BW116|The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!]]'', where he speaks without an accent. This may have been an oversight of both the [[Pokémon Chronicles]] and [[The Pokémon Company International]] production teams, since after TPCi took over the dub, his Hispanic accent returned only in ''[[DP021|Ya See We Want an Evolution!]]''.
