'''Iris''' (Japanese: '''アイリス''' ''Iris'') is an aspiring [[Type expert|Dragon Master]] and a former {{ashfr|traveling companion}} of {{Ash}} who debuted in ''[[BW001|In the Shadow of Zekrom!]]''. In ''[[Pokémon Journeys: The Series]]'', she is revealed to have become the {{pkmn|Champion}} of [[Unova]] and becomes one of the eight best Trainers in the {{pkmn|world}} within the [[World Coronation Series]].

====Pre-series====

One day, sometime prior to her {{pkmn|journey}}, she met a wild {{TP|Iris|Drilbur}} that had injured a {{p|Patrat}} and had stolen its food. Angered, she sought justice for what the Drilbur had done and challenged him. After countless defeats, she finally managed to outmaneuver the Mole Pokémon and get him caught in some vines dangling just over a cliff. After coming to his rescue, the two became good friends and began {{pkmn|training}} together. After many victories against different types of {{pkmn|Trainer}}s, Drilbur [[Evolution|evolved]] into an {{p|Excadrill}}. The two then got the opportunity to meet [[Drayden]], a Dragon Master, who praised Iris for her skill in {{pkmn|battle}}. When he asked who was teaching her how to battle she responded that she was teaching herself with the help of the Pokémon she had befriended in the village. Brimming with confidence, she then challenged Drayden to a battle. However, Drayden's {{p|Haxorus}} was more powerful than Iris had anticipated and Excadrill was easily defeated. After suffering defeat and becoming distrustful of his Trainer (due to Iris pushing him to keep battling even though he knew it was a lost cause), Excadrill then closed himself off from Iris, rarely opening up, and never showing emotion.

Iris competed in the [[Club Battle]] along with multiple other Trainers, including her [[rival]], Georgia. Her first battle was against [[Jimmy Ray]] and his {{p|Watchog}} in ''[[BW040|Cilan Versus Trip, Ash Versus Georgia!]]'', which Iris easily won with her Emolga. She then battled against [[Stephan]] and his {{TP|Stephan|Sawk}} in ''[[BW041|The Club Battle Hearts of Fury: Emolga Versus Sawk!]]'', which she also managed to win with Emolga. She then went up against [[Luke]] and his {{p|Golett}} in [[BW042|the next episode]], using Axew. In the battle Axew learned {{m|Outrage}}, which he used to defeat Golett. In the final round, Iris went up against Ash and his {{p|Pikachu}}, while Iris used her Excadrill. After a long fight, Excadrill managed to defeat Pikachu, allowing Iris to win the tournament, along with a full set of [[Wing]]s.

Her fear of the {{t|Ice}} [[type]] has been put to the test in some episodes, like in ''[[BW079|Caution: Icy Battle Conditions!]]'', where she entered the cold [[Icirrus Gym]] and saw Ash facing [[Brycen]]'s Ice-type Pokémon. Some time later, in ''[[BW081|Crisis at Ferroseed Research!]]'', she had to command Georgia's {{p|Vanilluxe}} in order to escape the [[Ferroseed Research Institute]] as her Pokémon were unable to help.

During the ensuing battle, Iris was surprised to see Ash having also caught himself a {{AP|Dragonite}}, as well as a {{AP|Dracovish}}, both of whom she adored, even despite the latter's unusual appearance. Ash was also surprised to find out that Iris's Axew had fully evolved into a {{TP|Iris|Haxorus}} and become her strongest Pokémon. When Ash's Dragonite started to get overwhelmed, Iris used her powers to communicate with it and encouraged it to have fun while battling, as she and Haxorus had gotten strong doing exactly that. Thanks to this, Dragonite was able to learn {{m|Draco Meteor}} and defeat Haxorus, giving Ash the victory and advancing him to the Ultra Class. However, Iris wasn't upset about her loss, and she and Ash promised to battle again once she had increased her ranking as well.

In ''[[JN118|Battling as Hard as Stone!]]'', Iris met [[Hop]], {{an|Leon}}'s brother, while joining Goh in the stands. After Ash had emerged victorious against Steven, Iris wished him good luck for the remainder of the competition and bid him and Goh farewell, before returning to Unova.

====Other appearances====

Despite her understanding of Dragon types, Iris has limited knowledge about the variety of non-[[Unova]]n Dragon-type Pokémon, and often assumes that some Pokémon are Dragon types based solely on their appearance. This was seen when Iris believed that {{AP|Charizard}} was a Dragon-type Pokémon during ''[[BW116|The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!]]'', and also mistakenly believed {{p|Gyarados}} also was a Dragon type during ''[[BW141|Best Wishes Until We Meet Again!]]'' until she was corrected by Cilan.
